The European Super League is set to be suspended. The decision comes after several of the major clubs set to be involved with the league backed out following massive backlash from supporters, players, UEFA, FIFA and domestic leagues. The Super League, originally founded with 12 big-name members, released a statement on Tuesday night, two days after its official announcement, saying it will "reconsider the most appropriate steps to reshape the project" after all six of the Premier League clubs said they would withdrawal. Here's the full statement from the Super League :
"The European Super League is convinced that the current status quo of European football needs to change. We are proposing a new European competition because the existing system does not work. Our proposal is aimed at allowing the sport to evolve while generating resources and stability for the full football pyramid, including helping to overcome the financial difficulties experienced by the entire football community as a result of the pandemic. It would also provide materially enhanced solidarity payments to all football stakeholders. Despite the announced departure of the English clubs, forced to take such decisions due the pressure out on them, we are convinced our proposal is fully aligned with European law and regulations as was demonstrated today by a court decision to protect the Super League from third party actions. Given the current circumstances, we shall reconsider the most appropriate steps to reshape the project, always having in mind our goals of offering fans the best experience possible while enhancing solidarity payments for the entire football community". The first domino to fall in this process on Tuesday was Chelsea, whose supporters learned of the news of the Blues' withdrawal during a protest against the Super League. Shortly thereafter it was Manchester City and then the rest of the English clubs slated to be in the Super League (Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur) backing out. Also Atletico Madrid, Inter Milan, AC Milan and Juventus officially released statements saying they will pull out, while Barcelona and Real Madrid didn't yet. |

Twelve of Europe's top soccer clubs have announced plans to form a so-called European Super League, in a move that looks set to rock the foundations of the sport's top competitions, including preeminent leagues in England, Spain and Italy and extending all the way up to the World Cup. In a joint announcement Sunday night, six English clubs (Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur) alongside three teams from Italy (AC Milan, Inter Milan and Juventus) and three from Spain (Atlético Madrid, Barcelona and Real Madrid) laid out plans to form a breakaway competition, referred to in the announcement as the Super League. The group plans to add three additional clubs before the Super League's inaugural season, which is "intended to commence as soon as is practiceable," according to the announcement posted on the 12 clubs' websites. The joint statement says the league will ultimately consist of 20 clubs and be governed by the founding clubs. The plans, which would represent the most significant shake-up of elite European soccer in recent history, was met with immediate condemnation from politicians, fans, former players and the sport's regulators. FIFA, the global governing body for football, denounced the formation of the Super League, saying it goes against FIFA's core principles of solidarity, inclusivity, integrity and equitable financial redistribution. "FIFA can only express its disapproval to a 'closed European breakaway league' outside of the international football structures and not respecting the aforementioned principles," FIFA said in a statement. In a statement issued in January, after rumors of the new Super League began circulating, FIFA said that it would not recognize the breakaway organization and went so far as to say that "any club or player involved in such a competition would as a consequence not be allowed to participate in any competition organized by FIFA or their respective confederation". That would include soccer's top competition, the World Cup, which is held every four years; the Champions League, which now brings together Europe's best clubs every year, and any regional competitions like the European Cup or the African Cup. In UEFA's Sunday statement, it referenced FIFA's earlier statement stressing that Super League clubs "will be banned from playing in any other competition at domestic, European or world level, and their players could be denied the opportunity to represent their national teams." Even before Sunday's official Super League announcement, European football's governing body along with several other governing bodies and leagues issued a joint statement condemning the new league's formation. UEFA, which oversees all European football, along with the English, Spanish, and Italian governing bodies and the top flight leagues from those three countries co-signed the statement. "We wish to reiterate that we (UEFA, the English FA, RFEF, FIGC, the Premier League, LaLiga, Lega Serie A, but also FIFA and all our member associations) will remain united in our efforts to stop this cynical project, a project that is founded on the self-interest of a few clubs at a time when society needs solidarity more than ever," their statement reads in part. "We will consider all measures available to us, at all levels, both judicial and sporting in order to prevent this happening. Football is based on open competitions and sporting merit; it cannot be any other way". No German or French clubs were involved in the Super League's formation.
The UEFA Executive Committee today approved a new format for its club competitions as of the 2024/25 season. The reforms come after an extensive consultation across the football family and received unanimous backing from the ECA Board and the UEFA Club Competitions Committee (made of a majority of club representatives) last Friday. The changes made are designed to secure the positive future of European football at every level and meet the evolving needs of all its stakeholders. Unequivocally confirming joint commitment to the principle of open competition and sporting merit across the continent, the common purpose has also been to sustain domestic leagues. Further decisions regarding matters such as the rebalancing of the access list, match dates, seeding system, format for the finals, coefficients and financial distribution will be made by the end of the year and potential adjustments to the format approved today could still be made if necessary. At the same time, UEFA will also reaffirm its strong financial commitment to the whole of European football and initiate steps to ensure that greater financial solidarity will be delivered to a wider spectrum of clubs who do not participate in UEFA club competitions. This will reinforce the solid foundation on which the game in Europe is built. UEFA will also open a dialogue with all relevant stakeholders with a view to proposing safeguards and protections for players’ health across competitions at all levels. Taking the total number of teams from 32 to 36 in the UEFA Champions League, the biggest change will see a transformation from the traditional group stage to a single league stage including all participating teams. Every club will now be guaranteed a minimum of 10 league stage games against 10 different opponents (five home games, five away) rather than the previous six matches against three teams, played on a home and away basis. The top eight sides in the league will qualify automatically for the knockout stage, while the teams finishing in ninth to 24th place will compete in a two-legged play-off to secure their path to the last 16 of the competition. Similar format changes will also be applied to the UEFA Europa League (8 matches in the league stage) and UEFA Europa Conference League (6 matches in the league stage). Subject to further discussions and agreements, these two competitions may also be expanded to a total of 36 teams each in the league stage. Qualification for the UEFA Champions League will continue to be open and earned through a team’s performance in domestic competitions. One of the additional places will go to the club ranked third in the championship of the association in fifth position in the UEFA national association ranking. Another will be awarded to a domestic champion by extending from four to five the number of clubs qualifying via the so-called "Champions Path". The final two places will go to the clubs with the highest club coefficient over the last five years that have not qualified for the Champions League group stage but have qualified either for the Champions League qualification phase, the Europa League or the Europa Conference League. All games before the final will still be played midweek, recognising the importance of the domestic calendar of games across Europe. |
