Well I doubt many people outside Roma or Italy would have been crying back in 1984 (sorry) when Liverpool picked up the cup. Corruption in football has been rife for years but hopefully now UEFA is beginning to stamp it all out and for good. I don't like cheating, match fixing or anything else that brings the game into disrepute. 1984 is ofcourse a long long time ago and both teams have moved on. The 80's was a great decade for producing the underdogs against the giants. In Scotland we had Dundee United and Aberdeen punching well above their weight. In England we have Brian Clough working a minor miracle with Nottingham Forest. And then at the beginning of the 21st century we had Leeds United in the last 4 of the Champions league, now look at them, playing in the the 2nd tier of English football. These days unfortunately money talks. Leicester City however did buck this trend last year which really made the rest of the world sit up and take notice Every fan of every football club across the world will always dream that one day even if it is only for a brief moment in time can mix it up there with the world elite. I'm not one to boast here but 3 years later in 1987 Dundee United did make it all the way to a European Final in the shape of the UEFA Cup but lost to IFK Gothenburg and along the way beat Barcelona twice. Anyhow right now the only dream I have is to see Dundee United crowned league champions of the Scottish Championship come the end of this season |

Well, regarding Dundee United revenge against AS Roma, I don' t know if this will ever happen, as you saw yesterday is very difficult for AS Roma to qualify in group stage (and it' s even harder to qualify directly by arriving first or second in Serie A). |

Looking at the European results from last night, purely from a Scottish point of view I am delighted to see Celtic making it to the group stages after a 2 year absence. In Scotland there is a universal dislike to the old firm, we support anybody who plays them and beats them however when it comes to European competitions all differences are set to one side for the greater good of the game as its very important to have Scottish clubs still in Europe. It enhances our reputation and puts Scotland back on the map
With regards to AS Roma a lot of members are probably unaware of this but back in 1984 my Dundee United team were only 90 minutes away from what would have been at the time the biggest European game that was currently in place in the shape of the European Cup. Dundee United led 2-0 in from the first leg at Tannadice but then lost 3-0 away in the return leg at the Olympic Stadium which later turned out that the referee in charge of the game was subject to bribery and was paid 100million lire. The Italian press at the time also accused the Dundee United team of being on drugs to which then manager Jim Mclean responded by saying that if we were I hoped we were still on them for the next game. This in turn created a very hostile atmosphere and in effect cheated us out of what would have been and still to this day would have been the biggest match ever in our history. A dream final against Liverpool would have been magnificent but sadly history put an end to any of these aspirations [hidden link - please register] Dundee United manager Jim Mclean in 1984 being given an ear bashing by the Roma players after the European exit [hidden image - please register] The Dundee United team in 2016 is very different to to the one back then, currently we are are in Scotland's second tier after being relegated last season at the home of our oldest rivals Dundee [hidden image - please register] [hidden image - please register] [hidden image - please register] This season we aim to bounce straight back up at the first attempt after something of a dodgy start to life in the Championship where we recently lost away to Dumbarton but managed to get our first league win of the season last weekend with victory over Ayr United. Hopefully one day we'll be back to competing with Europe's finest and perhaps one day we'll meet Roma again and get our revenge |
