Re: Formula 1 General Chat & Discussion

The result of the Austrian Grand Prix has changed after the Formula 1 stewards handed out a swathe of fresh penalties hours after the conclusion of the race. Max Verstappen won the race on track, even stopping with two laps to go for fresh tyres to set the fastest lap. He finished ahead of Charles Leclerc in second while Sergio Perez piloted the other Red Bull car from 15th on the grid to third. But that was not the end of the matter. Shortly after the conclusion of the race, it was announced that Aston Martin had lodged an official protest. It emerged that the stewards' policing system for track limits violations had been overwhelmed during the race. Half the grid was penalised for repeat offences, but it turned out that there should have been many more such sanctions handed. Aston Martin's protest was upheld and the stewards were tasked with poring over more than 1,200 separate incidents where drivers may have gone outside the white lines during the race. That process took hours, but the final classification has now finally been announced after 83 further lap times were deleted. 12 time penalties were handed out in total, though none of them affected the top three. One of those to get a fresh penalty was Lewis Hamilton, who had 10 seconds added to his race time. That meant he dropped a place in the final standings. His Mercedes team-mate George Russell moves up to seventh place as a result. Pierre Gasly received the only other penalty which affects the points positions. His extra 10 seconds means Lance Stroll leapfrogs him into ninth place and the Alpine man loses a point. Elsewhere, Alex Albon and Logan Sargeant received one new 10 second penalty each while Yuki Tsunoda had five second added to his time. Nyck de Vries was given two post-race penalties for a total of 15 additional seconds. The other four penalties were all given to Esteban Ocon, totally a whopping extra 30 seconds on top of his race time. It will make no difference to the championship, though, as he finished outside the points on track anyway. The FIA released a statement in which it explained the "unprecedented" scenario. And the stewards published a document of their own in which it explained why Aston Martin's protest was upheld. It read: "The protest was lodged against the accuracy of the Provisional Classification. The Stewards first considered if the protest was admissible. The Stewards determined that as it was lodged on time and complied with the requirements of Chapter 13 of the FIA International Sporting Code, it was an admissible protest. "An examination of the list of deleted lap times provided to the Stewards by Race Control, revealed that a number of track limit infringements had not previously been referred to the Stewards for potential penalty. It was determined that some of these infringements warranted a penalty that was not previously applied when the Provisional Classification was published.

Re: Formula 1 General Chat & Discussion

This weekend’s Emilia Romagna Grand Prix has been cancelled after Formula One, the local authorities and the promoter in Imola agreed that it was not safe to proceed because of the risks of flooding caused by severe weather. F1 also was unwilling potentially to add to the burden on the community and emergency services in the region. It is understood the race is highly unlikely to be rescheduled for later in the year. The FIA said in a statement on its website : "Following discussions between Formula 1, the President of the FIA, the competent authorities, including the relevant Ministers, the President of the Automobile Club of Italy, the President of Emilia-Romagna Region, the Mayor of the City and the promoter, the decision has been taken not to proceed with the Grand Prix weekend at Imola. "The decision has been taken because it is not possible to safely hold the event for our fans, the teams and our personnel and it is the right and responsible thing to do given the situation faced by the towns and cities in the region. It would not be right to put further pressure on the local authorities and emergency services at this difficult time". Stefano Domenicali, the head of Formula One, said : "It is such a tragedy to see what has happened to Imola and Emilia-Romagna, the town and region that I grew up in, and my thoughts and prayers are with the victims of the flooding and the families and communities affected. I want to express my gratitude and admiration for the incredible emergency services who are working tirelessly to help those who need help and alleviate the situation, they are heroes and the whole of Italy is proud of them. The decision that has been taken is the right one for everyone in the local communities and the F1 family as we need to ensure safety and not create extra burden for the authorities while they deal with this very awful situation". The decision came after Italy’s deputy prime minister, Matteo Salvini, called for the race to be postponed as the extreme weather conditions hit the region. Salvini, who is also Italy’s transport minister, said in a statement it was "imperative to concentrate all efforts on coping with the emergency", including avoiding a traffic overload in the area, which has been battered by bad weather in recent days. "Let’s dedicate ourselves to relief efforts", he said. That came after Formula One and the authorities in Imola told teams and personnel not to attend the circuit on Wednesday due to the risks of flooding caused by severe weather. The Emilia Romagna region has been placed under a red threat-level warning from the Italian authorities because of persistent heavy rain that threatens to cause flooding and landslides. On Tuesday the F1 paddock at the "Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari" was evacuated as a precaution because of the risk of flooding from the adjacent Santerno river, which runs within metres of the paddock and could burst its banks. The Emilia Romagna region has been badly affected by torrential rain which caused extensive flooding, killing two people and forcing hundreds to be evacuated from their homes, earlier this month.
