New population of world’s rarest fish discovered off Tasmanian coast ...

A team of divers from IMAS and the citizen science project Reef Life Survey (RLS) have discovered a new
population of what is believed to be the world’s rarest fish. Red Handfish (Thymichthys politus) are found
only off south east Tasmania and until last week only one remaining population of around 20-40 individuals
had been identified.

[hidden image - please register]

The new site, which will not be disclosed until management options can be discussed, also contains an estimated
20-40 individuals and is a number of kilometres away from the previously known population in Frederick Henry Bay.
Each site covers just 50 metres by 20 metres - about the size of two tennis courts - as the range of the handfish
is limited by the fact it walks on the seafloor instead of swimming.

The new population was identified after a member of the public reported seeing an individual
handfish, with a team of seven divers spending two days searching the area.

At Japan’s suicide cliffs, he's walked more than 600 people back from the edge ...

Almost no one jumps on rainy days.

They jump when the sun returns and the masses step outside, reminding them of their misery. They jump during financial crises and in the early spring, when Japanese
schools open and the pressures of life converge. Yukio Shige's routine, though, is the same regardless of the weather. Nearly every day, he clambers across the high
basalt columns of the Tojinbo cliffs, the Sea of Japan thrashing 80 feet below. He peers into binoculars, seeking hunched figures on distant rocks, ready to talk them down.

In 15 years, he's walked 609 people back from the edge.

[hidden image - please register]

Shige worked as a police officer for 42 years, and at Tojinbo, his final posting, he frequently had to remove corpses from the waves. In 2003, he spotted an elderly couple
on a bench and approached them. They said they owned a bar in Tokyo and were deeply in debt; they planned to jump at sunset. Hi called his colleagues, who took them
to the local welfare bureau. But the police then sent the couple away, and five days later, they hanged themselves in Niigata, a neighboring prefecture. [hidden link - please register]

Beggar bullying people for money caught by police with £500,000 in his pockets ...

The man was threatening people who would not hand him money outside the Resecentrum bus and train station in Uppsala,
50 miles north of Swedish capital Stockholm. When apprehended by officers, bank notes began tumbling from his jacket
pockets as they discovered he was carrying approximately six million krona - around £535,000.

[hidden image - please register]

Police chief Jale Poljarevius said: "I have never heard of so much money in a situation like this. There were just more
and more bundles. "Anyone who walks around with six million in cash will be a suspect of crime." The largest note in
Sweden is 1,000 krona, meaning he had at least 6,000 notes. It took officers more than a day to count it all.

[hidden image - please register]

A spokesperson for Uppsala Police said the 55-year-old Swedish man was trying to get pennies for enough
money to get a train ticket to his home in the west of the country. She added: "He was arrested on suspicion
of money laundering. The prosecutor is carrying out an investigation to see whether he will be freed or appear
in court in a few days.

"We don't know whether he got this money through begging, if he won it in a lottery or it is the proceeds of crime.”

Search for buried treasure linked to Illinois man's death at Yellowstone ...

Last summer, 53-year-old Jeff Murphy was hiking in Yellowstone National Park when he disappeared. Park investigators
found his body on June 9, where Murphy had fallen 500 feet from Turkey Pen Peak, after accidentally stepping into a chute.

[hidden image - please register]

But he wasn't on just any hike. He was looking for a treasure box of gold and jewels worth up to $2 million, buried somewhere
in the Rocky Mountains by an eccentric millionaire named Forrest Fenn. Fenn, an art dealer and millionaire in his 80s, lives in
Santa Fe, N.M. In his self-published memoir, Fenn included a poem that supposedly leads to the treasure he hid in the mountains.

[hidden image - please register]

"The ornate, Romanesque box is 10-by-10 inches and weighs about 40 pounds
when loaded," NPR's John Burnett reported in 2016. "Fenn has only revealed that
it is hidden in the Rocky Mountains, somewhere between Santa Fe and the Canadian
border at an elevation above 5,000 feet. It's not in a mine, a graveyard or near a structure."

Murphy is the fourth man to die while searching for the chest. [hidden link - please register]

Driver tried to cheat police with help a mannequin ...

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police said a traffic officer ticketed a van driver caught
using the carpool lanes with a mannequin passenger. The RCMP said a Port Mann
Traffic Services officer on Highway 1 in the Langley/Surrey area of British Columbia
spotted a white van speeding and crossing into the high-occupancy vehicle lanes without signaling.

[hidden image - please register]

The officer stopped the van and discovered the driver's passenger was a mannequin
dressed in sunglasses and a hoodie. "This is one of those cases where the RCMP
got their mannequin," police said. "The passenger exercised the right to remain silent."
"The driver of the vehicle was issued several tickets for the alleged offenses and the
passenger, who did not protest, was given a ride to her new home...in a police car," police said.

[hidden image - please register]

Police said users of the HOV lanes must have at least two actual humans in the vehicle.
"In this case, the mannequin was seized to prevent the continuation of the offense of Illegal Use of HOV lane," RCMP said.

Sneaky dog steals pancakes — and almost burns down family's home ...

The Southwick Fire Department in Massachusetts recently posted a video from a local homeowner who
nearly lost everything on account of their dog's insatiable tummy.

[hidden image - please register]

The family wasn't home at the time, but footage taken by a home security camera shows exactly what happened.
The dog is seen entering the kitchen before hopping up to nibble on pancakes that had been left on top of t
he stove. In so doing, however, the unwitting pup accidentally ignited one of the gas burners, sparking a fire.

As the home begins to fill with smoke, the guilty dog and her canine companion try their best
to play it cool. Luckily, the house was equipped with a monitored alarm system, so first responders were soon on the scene.
