New Zealanders build island in bid to avoid alcohol ban ...

A group of New Zealanders has constructed a sand island in coastal waters, seemingly in a creative attempt
to avoid a ban on drinking in public places. The group built the structure at low tide in the Tairua estuary on the
Coromandel peninsula on Sunday afternoon, reports said. They then installed a picnic table and ice box for drinks.

[hidden image - please register]

Locals joked that they were in "international waters" and thus exempt from an official liquor ban. The group
drank into the night on New Year's Eve, watching the fireworks, reported New Zealand website stuff.co.nz - and
the construction was still intact on Monday morning. A ban on public drinking is in force in Coromandel over
the New Year period and those violating the ban face a fine of $250 (£130; US$180) or arrest.

[hidden image - please register]

But authorities seemed to be taking the initiative in light-hearted spirit.

"That's creative thinking - if I had known [about it] I probably would have joined them," said local police commander Inspector John Kelly when told about the sand island.

Every day this dog goes shopping all by himself, returns with bags full of food ...

Meet Pituco, the awesome doggie from Brazil who goes to a shop all by himself every
day to collect his food, taking canine independence to another level. “Everybody
knows Pituco,” Agro Pet shop’s vet told The Dodo. “His food is on the top shelf, so
we have to hand it to him. He barks until we do.”

[hidden image - please register]

As soon as the doggie gets his food, he simply heads home. Of course, the shop
doesn’t just give Pituco his food for free. Agro Pet puts everything the canine grabs
on a tab, and later the dog’s humans come by to pay.

[hidden image - please register]

But Pituco, being the good boy that he clearly is, is not only concerned with himself
and his food. Sometimes his humans call Agro Pet to ask for cat food or birdseed for
their other pets – and Pituco is always more than happy to go to the shop and bring
the parcels back home for the other pets in the family.

I think all of us are madly in love with this doggie by now… Smile

Is Jingle Bells your favourite festive song? It turns out it isn’t about Christmas at all ...

NO children’s nativity or carol concert would be complete without Jingle Bells. The popular ditty is the song that seems to
capture the essence of Christmas and the yuletide festivities wouldn’t be the same without it.

[hidden image - please register]

But it turns out that Jingle Bells is not really a Christmas song at all. What’s more, there’s another whole verse which we all
ignore, in a bid to make it sound more Christmassy. Jingle Bells was written by American composer James Pierpoint in 1857,
and is actually about Thanksgiving. It was originally called One Horse Open Sleigh and none of the lyrics actually relate to Christmas.

[hidden image - please register]

According to Mark Forsyth, the author of A Christmas Cornucopia: The Curious Origins of Our Yuletide Traditions (Viking Penguin),
it was never meant as a Christmas song and is about “winter fun and frolics” generally. [hidden link - please register]

Car chase suspect dances for police before arrest ...

A man who led police on a nearly 32-kilometre chase through Houston, Texas, was
taken into custody only after dancing once he stepped out of his car.

[hidden image - please register]

The unidentified suspect came to a stop early on Thursday (local time) before striking
spike strips police had laid across Interstate 45. He eventually complied with police
orders to step out of his car, but rather than lie on the ground the man began a dance
with arms held high.

[hidden image - please register]

The episode concluded when a police dog was deployed. Police Lieutenant Larry Crowson
said officers were concerned the man might try to flee into traffic, so they unleashed the dog.

"At one point he started backing up like he was going to run away from the scene, potentially
endangering officers by running across the freeway," he said. "At that point we deployed our
canine to safely take him into custody." [hidden link - please register]

This cat named DOG helps train pups to be service dogs ...

Not many cats get to have a career as a dog trainer, but one Missouri feline is doing just that.

[hidden image - please register]

The Associated Press reported Thursday on D-O-G (pronounced “dee-OH-jee”), a
fluffy black and white cat who plays an important role at Support Dogs, Inc. in St. Louis.
The group trains dogs for a variety of purposes, including assisting people with
mobility-related issues and people with hearing loss.

[hidden image - please register]

Dogs aiding people with disabilities need to be comfortable around other types of animals and
remain calm in the face of distraction. D-O-G is apparently the perfect candidate for testing
their patience and can be seen in the video below batting at a dog’s tail and playing with a dog’s leash.

Now a certified internet star, D-O-G has come a long way from his former life as a barn kitten.
Nadine Wenig, director of canine services at Support Dogs, Inc., met the friendly kitten over
the summer at a bed and breakfast and was “instantly smitten,” according to This Dog’s Life.
The owners of the business ended up giving her the kitten, and she brought him back to the
nonprofit’s center, where staff cautiously introduced him to the resident dogs.

[hidden image - please register]

“We saw that he was completely fearless despite his size and had no issue being
around and close to the dogs,” volunteer manager Stephanie McCreary told This Dog’s Life.

Deer drops by gift shop - then comes back later with her kids ...

With the holidays fast approaching, shopping is probably pretty high on everybody's to-do list. And, sure
enough, this mother deer is apparently no exception.

[hidden image - please register]

Lori Jones works in a little shop selling gifts and supplies at the Horsetooth Inn and RV Park, a scenic getaway
nestled at the foot of the Rockies in Fort Collins, Colorado. There, encounters with local wildlife are far from
uncommon — but one recent visitor in particular did stand out. Or, to put it more accurately, she walked right in.

[hidden image - please register]

Jones was working in the shop this week when, out of the blue, a wild doe appeared in the doorway. Moments later,
as Jones looked on in astonishment, the curious deer actually strolled inside as if she were just another customer
perusing the shelves. “It was hilarious,” Jones told The Dodo. “She was looking at the sunglasses and the chips.
I was laughing so hard.”

[hidden image - please register]

This deer isn't a total stranger to Jones. She is the matriarch of a family known to live in the area, occasionally
passing through the grounds to a nearby field where they graze. Never before, however, had the deer entered
a building (nor had she shown any interest in shopping, for that matter). Assuming the deer had simply lost
her way, Jones decided to escort her outside, luring her back to the field with a peanut bar in hand.
And that was that — or so Jones thought. She was wrong.

[hidden image - please register]

"About 30 minutes later, here comes the deer again with her whole family," Jones said. "I’m in the office doing inventory,
and I come out to find her there. This time she brought back her twins, and this one young buck that she adopted."
The kids waited at the door. Jones made sure of it.

[hidden image - please register]

"They were just looking in the doorway like, ‘Can we come in too?’ I said, ‘No,’" Jones recalled. "It was so funny." [hidden link - please register]

Even after 8 years, this squirrel keeps coming back to visit the family that saved her ...

When Brantley Harrison and her family rescued a tiny, injured squirrel back in 2009, then released her back
into the wild, they didn’t expect to ever see her again. 8 years later, however, little Bella still comes to visit
them almost every day – as long as snacks are provided, of course.

[hidden image - please register]

After a harrowing owl attack left Bella near death as a baby, she was graciously taken in by the Greenville County,
South Carolina family, and raised by them alongside three other squirrels named Larry, Curly, and Moe. Bella stayed
with the Harrisons until spring 2010, at which point she had healed successfully thanks to a steady diet of fruit, nuts,
and formula, and was ready to romp around in the forest. The sweet squirrel never strayed too far from her adopted
home, though, and stops by to say hello whenever she can, despite how much time has passed.

[hidden image - please register]

“Bella sits right at the front door waiting for someone to notice she has come by for a visit. She has even resorted to
jumping over to the dining room window to peer in for someone to see her,” Brantley told [hidden link - please register]

[hidden image - please register]

The most amazing part? A few years after Bella’s original stay at the Harrison house, she found her way back to
them with an injured foot – and a belly full of babies – necessitating another few months of rehab. “It was truly
amazing to watch the baby I raised raise her own babies,” Brantley said. Bella now even has her own Instagram
page with almost 4 thousand followers!
