Legendary Ducati designer Massimo Tamburini dies aged 70.

Legendary motorbike designer Massimo Tamburini has died this weekend at the age of 70 after a lengthy battle with cancer. The designer, who was responsible for some of the most iconic and recognisable models in the sports biking world, was known for working with the likes of Cagiva, Ducati, MV Agusta and Bimota, of which he was a founding partner. He is widely credited with introducing elements such as the single-sided swingarm design and undertail exhaust to Ducati - ideas that can still be seen in the company's designs today.
In particular, he will long be remembered for two of his most famous bikes, the Ducati 916 Superbike released in 1993 and the MV Augusta F4, which appeared a few years later in 1997.

Tsunami alert after 8.2 quake strikes off Chile.

A quake of 8.2 magnitude has struck off northern Chile, triggering a tsunami alert and killing at least five people.
The US Geological Survey said the quake struck at 20:46 local time (23:46 GMT) about 86km (52 miles) north-west of the mining area of Iquique.Waves of up to 2.1m (6ft) have hit some areas in Chile, and there have been power cuts, fires and landslides.Tens of thousands of people were evacuated in affected areas, where a state of emergency has been declared.Officials said the dead included people who were crushed by collapsing walls or died of heart attacks.Iquique Governor Gonzalo Prieto told local media that in addition to those killed, several people had been seriously injured. While the government said it had no reports of significant damage to coastal areas, a number of adobe homes were reported destroyed in Arica. At least eight strong aftershocks followed in the few hours after the quake, including a 6.2 tremor. The interior minister also told Chilean TV that some 300 women inmates had escaped from a prison in Iquique. Re: News from the World

(CNN) -- The International Court of Justice ruled Monday that Japan can no longer continue its annual whale hunt, rejecting the country's argument that it was for scientific purposes.
"Japan shall revoke any extant authorization, permit or license granted in relation to JARPA II, and refrain from granting any further permits in pursuance of that program," the court said, referring to the research program.
The International Court of Justice is the principal judicial organ of the United Nations.
Japan's fleet carries out an annual whale hunt despite a worldwide moratorium, taking advantage of a loophole in the law that permits the killing of the mammals for scientific research. Whale meat is commonly available for consumption in Japan.
Each year, environmental groups such as Sea Shepherd pursue the Japanese hunters in an attempt to disrupt the whaling. The resulting confrontations have led to collisions of ships and the detention of activists.
The Australian government challenged the Japanese whaling program in the International Court of Justice, leading to Monday's ruling.

5.1 earthquake shakes L.A., Southern California.

LOS ANGELES — A 5.1 earthquake centered at La Habra near Los Angeles rolled Southern California Friday evening.

The strong earthquake was felt widely across the region shortly after 9 p.m. PT. The USGS said the epicenter was one mile from Brea, located about 20 miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles, and three miles from Rowland Heights and Fullerton.
Southern California Edison reported power outages to about 2,000 customers following the quake.

The quake triggered a rockslide that closed Carbon Canyon Road in northern Orange County near the center of the quake, the California Highway Patrol and Brea police reported. The rockslide caused a car to overturn, and the people inside the car sustained minor injuries.
It was followed by more than two dozen aftershocks. The 5.1 quake was preceded by a 3.6 quake an hour earlier.
The larger quake rattled bookshelves across the region, and police and fire officials said they were looking for any damage. Several people who live in the area near the quake posted pictures on social media showing broken glasses and dishes that tumbled from shelves or cabinets.

Los Angeles Department of Public Works said it was sending crews to check dams, bridges and other infrastructure for damage.

Callers to KNX-AM reported seeing a brick wall collapse, water sloshing in a swimming pool, and wires and trees swaying back and forth.
