One of the worst tragedies in Italian history happened
last night on the A16 Napoli-Canosa when a bus with 48 passengers fell down from a viaduct : 38 deads and 10 woundeds (5 children), probably for a brakes failure. All my condolences to the victims families

It has just been confirmed that there is an Italian victim in the tragedy of the derailed
train in Santiago de Compostela: his name was Dario Lombardo, 25 y.o. , born in Messina; all my prayers to him, his family and all the other victims and families involved in this absurd tragedy

Yes, I cannot describe what I was feeling when I watched the News where they have given a report about this accident.
It remainds me back to the terrible accident of "Eschede" a small village at the railroad between Hannover and Hamburg. Spain Today: [hidden link - please register] Eschede 1998 [hidden link - please register] I have worked for 5 years in the construction department of a rail vehicles company. (1994-1999) Here in the case of Spain the News said it has been a mistake by the train driver. The train was driving through a curve with a speed of 190 km/h instead to keep the prescriptived speed limit of 80 km/h. In the case of "Eschede" the reason was a material fatigure of the shrinked wheel ring on the forged wheel body. It got broken and penetrated the floor of the wagon. To reduce the operational costs maintanance had been reduced! The rest is history! If the German "ICE" had used "Jacobs type bogies" the number of deads had been much lower. This special bogies join two wagons and the accordion affect can be reduced very much. The French "TGV" and its descendant "AGV" use this type of bogies invented by Wilhelm Jakobs (1858–1942).
