Re: Tennis in General - Results and Comments

2021 US OPEN - DAY 14 (LAST) :
Results Finals :

Men' s Singles : Daniil Medvedev (2) won his 13th ATP tournament in career (first Grand Slam and sixth on hard), defeating
Novak Djokovic (1) 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 after 2h 16' Thumb up

As it was human to happen, the start of the match for Djokovic was very nervous : uncertain on serve, unable to find rhythm on the baseline, the Serbian was broken in the opening game with a double fault and three unforced errors, while Medvedev also appearead to be very cautious in the first games, but, on serve, he was absolutely intractable, and, at the rate of two aces per game, he builded his advantage, keeping his five service games, in which he lost just three points (including a double fault) and winning the first set 6-4 after only 37'. The crowd was clearly on the side of Djokovic, encouraging him at every opportunity and the opportunity arrived immediately at the start of second set, with Medvedev, that, in second game, found himself down 0-40 with two unforced errors and a double fault, but the Russian, without giving the slightest hint of tension and running between one point and the other, won five consecutive points and with the usual two aces kept his serve, then the rallies got longer and the games fought : first Djokovic saved a break point at 1-1 with a winning serve, then, in the following game, it was Medvedev to save a break-point, with the Serbian who smashed the racket, taking a well-deserved warning. The turning point of the set came immediately after : a double fault and three unforced errors condemned the Serbian to lose his serve, putting him even more in trouble, because, from that moment on, the Russian scored 11 points in a row on his serve, winning even the second set 6-4 after 90'; in the third set, Medvedev was relentless, going 4-0, then 5-1, when the crowd became a factor, supporting as they have never done before the world's N° 1 : the Russian began to feel the pressure and, on 5-2, committed a double fault on the match-point, then, with another one, he lost for the first time in the match his serve, with Nole approaching on 4-5 and, moved by the great support of the crowd, at the change of court he broke in tears, covered by the towel, as evidence of the moment of great emotion that he was experiencing. This time, Medvedev didn' t get distracted, going immediately 30-0, then 40-15: on the first match-points he committed another double fault, but on the second a winning serve closed the match, inflicting to Novak Djokovic the biggest disappointment of his career, leaving him at 20 Majors along with Federer and Nadal and shattering the Serbian's dream of becoming the third player to complete the Grand Slam (i.e. winning all 4 Grand Slam tournaments in the same season), that remains, in the men's singles, in the hands of Donald Budge and Rod Laver only; the Russian, on the other hand, finally broke the Slam taboo after two Finals lost (one in New York in 2019 and one against Djokovic in February in Australia).

Re: Tennis in General - Results and Comments

2021 US OPEN - DAY 13 :
Results Finals :

Women' s Singles : Emma Raducanu (q) won her first WTA tournament in careeer (without losing a single set), defeating
Leylah Annie Fernandez 6-4, 6-3 after 1h 51' Thumb up

In the first US Open Final between teenagers since 1999, the two players entered the field ready for their strategy, facing each other openly : 14' for the first two games, 23' for the first three; Raducanu broke her opponent on the first attempt, going 2-0 in a 16-point game, but Fernandez immediately broke her back in the very next game, then there were no break-points until the tenth game, when, on 5-4 in her favor, Raducanu increased the pressure, reaching two set-points at 15-40, promptly canceled by her opponent's service, but, shortly thereafter, on the fourth attempt, she won the set after 58 '; in the second set, the Canadian player, thanks to a couple of unforced errors by the British, broke her in the third game, but in the next game, she was immediately broken back, then Raducanu continued to put pressure on her opponent, breaking her again in the sixth game and going 5-2, when Fernandez managed to save three match-points (two of them in a row) before going 3-5: here there was time for a last shred of "drama": on 30-30, Raducanu slipped onto the pitch, peeling her knee as she lost the point. Before serving on the break-point she was allowed to take a Medical Time-Out to heal the injury and, after the 3' break, the British saved a total of two break-points, before closing with an ace, that secure the most incredible Slam victory in the history of women's tennis, the first ever of a qualifier player in the US Open, also becoming, with 18 years, 9 months and 29 days, the youngest winner of a Slam since the 17-year-old Maria Sharapova won Wimbledon in July 2004 and earned 2.040 points (2.000 for the Grand Slam victory and 40 for passing the qualifying), with which she will climb 127 places in the world ranking, finishing at N° 23, while the finalist Fernandez will climb from N° 73 to N° 28, just 8 positions away from Canadian N° 1 Bianca Vanessa Andreescu.
