Re: Tennis in General - Results and Comments

The "U.S. Men's Clay Court Championship" in Houston was canceled for the second year in a row because of the Coronavirus pandemic, part of a series of changes to the men's tennis calendar announced by the ATP on Wednesday. The Houston tournament was supposed to be played April 3-11. It was among the dozens of professional tennis events scrapped in 2020 while the tours were on hiatus for several months. Until then, the "U.S. Men's Clay Court Championship" had been held every year since 1929. Among the other 2021 updates the men's tour said it was making "in the face of scheduling challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic" was the move of the Hungarian Open clay-court tournament (usually held in Budapest in April) to Belgrade, Serbia. The tournament director of the Belgrade event will be Djordje Djokovic, a younger brother of No. 1-ranked Novak Djokovic. The "Serbia Open" is scheduled to be held April 19-25. Belgrade previously hosted a tournament from 2009 to 2012. The ATP added two tournaments just for 2021, in Singapore right after the Australian Open ends next month and in Marbella, Spain, starting April 5. The main-draw or qualifying fields are being expanded at some men's tournaments to give more players opportunities to compete.

Re: Tennis in General - Results and Comments

The WTA has today announced a provisional 2021 Tour calendar that maps out the season through July 11. Having previously announced the first seven weeks of the season, this latest update represents the next 20 weeks of 2021. The calendar reflects the Tour kicking off at the "Abu Dhabi WTA Women’s Tennis Open" in January through "The Championships - Wimbledon" in July. The first four WTA 1000 events of the year are also represented, including the "Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships", the "Miami Open presented by Itaú", the "Mutua Madrid Open" and the "Internazionali BNL d’ Italia" in Rome. The current schedule reflects a traditional WTA Tour calendar for the majority of the season past mid-March, albeit with a few changes due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The "BNP Paribas Open" in Indian Wells will not be held in its regularly scheduled timeframe in March and alternatives are being assessed for a potential date later in the season. Further updates to the WTA Tour calendar will be announced in due course, including the second edition of the "Shiseido WTA Finals" in Shenzhen.

Re: Tennis in General - Results and Comments

The ATP has announced a revised schedule for weeks 8-13 of the 2021 ATP Tour season, as tennis continues its return during the COVID-19 pandemic following the announcement of a reconfigured schedule for the first seven weeks earlier this month. Several early-season events are scheduled to follow the conclusion of the Australian Open, including the European Indoor, Latin American and Middle East swings, which lead into the "Miami Open presented by Itau" in the final two weeks of March. Due to the impact of COVID-19, the "BNP Paribas Open" in Indian Wells will not be held in its customary dates in March. Alternative dates are being assessed for the tournament to potentially take place later in the year. All subsequent sections of the 2021 calendar, beginning with the Spring clay-court season from week 14, remain unchanged at this time, with all tournaments planned to take place as originally scheduled. The ATP continues to assess opportunities for additional single-year licences to be scheduled in 2021 and will communicate any additions once confirmed.
Here's a look at the new calendar :

February 20-28 : Cordoba (ATP 250) & Montpellier (ATP 250)
February 27-March 7 : Rotterdam (ATP 500) & Buenos Aires (ATP 250)
March 6-14 : Doha (ATP 250), Santiago (ATP 250) & Marseille (ATP 250)
March 13-20 : Acapulco (ATP 500) & Dubai (ATP 500)
March 22-April 4 : Miami (ATP Masters 1000)

Re: Tennis in General - Results and Comments

The WTA has announced the schedule for the first seven weeks of the 2021 Tour calendar. The WTA has worked diligently with tournaments and players to provide as many job opportunities as possible while being mindful of increased travel restrictions and mandatory quarantine guidelines set forth by local governments. The season will kick off at the "Abu Dhabi WTA Women’s Tennis Open", a WTA 500 level event, from January 5-13 at "Zayed Sports City International Tennis Centre". The Australian Open qualifying will take place in Dubai from January 10-13, with both events then allowing for travel to Melbourne from one of Tennis Australia’s designated charter flight hubs of Dubai (in addition to Singapore and Los Angeles). Upon conclusion of those events, players and their respective support teams will travel to Australia where they will complete the mandatory two-week quarantine. Following the quarantine period, two WTA 500 tournaments will be held concurrently in Melbourne Park from January 31 - February 7. The 2021 Australian Open will then take place February 8-21 inclusive of singles, doubles and mixed doubles. A WTA 250 will be held the second week of the Australian Open, allowing athletes to remain in Melbourne, securing three weeks of competition. Due to travel restrictions and the mandatory quarantine, WTA 250 tournaments in Auckland and Shenzhen will not be held in 2021 but are scheduled to return to the WTA Tour calendar in 2022. The WTA continues to closely monitor the evolving status of tournaments for the remainder of 2021 with an announcement in the coming weeks surrounding a more expansive calendar.

Re: Tennis in General - Results and Comments

The ATP has today announced an update to the 2021 ATP Tour calendar, outlining a revised schedule for the first seven weeks of the season as tennis continues to navigate its return during the COVID-19 pandemic. Confirmed details of weeks 8-13 will be announced separately, while all subsequent sections of the 2021 calendar, beginning with the Spring clay-court season from week 14, remain unchanged at this time, with all tournaments planned to take place as originally scheduled. The opening week of the season will kick off with the ATP 250 Delray Beach Open by VITACOST.com, alongside a new single-year ATP 250 license on hard court in Antalya, Turkey. Australian Open men’s qualifying will take place from 10-13 January in Doha, and the allocated dates of 15-31 January will then allow for travel and a 14-day quarantine period for all players and support staff travelling to Melbourne, in accordance with requirements of Australian public health and immigration authorities. The controlled environment quarantine period will enable players to prepare ahead of a 12-team ATP Cup in Melbourne, played alongside the relocated Adelaide International, as well as an additional ATP 250 tournament, all held in Melbourne. The Australian Open, the first Grand Slam of the season, will follow from 8-21 February. ATP 250 events confirmed as not taking place in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic include the "ASB Classic" in Auckland and the "New York Open", while the "Tata Maharashtra Open" in Pune is unable to stage in its scheduled February week. The "Rio Open presented by Claro", an ATP 500 event, will not take place as originally scheduled, and alternative dates in the calendar will be assessed for it to potentially take place later in the year. The ATP will continue to assess opportunities for additional single-year licenses to be scheduled in the first quarter of 2021 and will communicate any additions once confirmed.

Re: Tennis in General - Results and Comments

The Women's Tennis Association (WTA) will rename its tournament categories from next season to align with the men's ATP, a sign of further collaboration between the tours following a season that was severely disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The global health crisis decimated the 2020 tennis calendar and prompted calls for a merger of the governing bodies, a suggestion that was well received by both the WTA and ATP. The women's tour has comprised of five tiers (Premier Mandatory, Premier 5, Premier, International and $125K events), while the ATP has Masters 1000, 500, and 250-level tournaments. From the 2021 season, the WTA's Premier Mandatory and Premier 5 tournaments will be categorized as WTA 1000, the Premier events will be WTA 500, the International level will be renamed WTA 250 while the $125K events will be known as WTA 125. "A numerical system allows for immediate understanding of tournament level, providing fans with a simple way to understand and engage with the Tour and tournaments," WTA President Micky Lawler told Reuters. "In addition to providing simplicity and immediate understanding, this provides alignment with ATP's tournament nomenclature so that professional tennis is consistent and reflects the same tournament naming system." Prize money and ranking points of the renamed WTA categories will not be changed to mirror that of their ATP equivalent.
