The ATP and WTA have today announced the cancellation of the 2020 "VTB Kremlin Cup" in Moscow, due to issues relating to COVID-19. Cancellation of the ATP 250 event, scheduled to run from 19 to 25 October, and WTA Premier event, from 26 October to 1 November, follows a recent increase in the COVID-19 infection rate in Moscow. As mandated by the Moscow City Administration, the event will no longer be permitted to go ahead in 2020. Other ATP 250 events in the same week in Antwerp ("European Open") and Cologne ("Bett1HULKS Championships") are scheduled to proceed as normal. The decision also does not impact staging of the ATP 500 "St. Petersburg Open", scheduled for the week prior. The ATP and WTA look forward to the "VTB Kremlin Cup" returning in 2021.
Freshly crowned US Open champion Naomi Osaka pulled out of the French Open with a sore hamstring : Japan's Osaka made the announcement just days after lifting her third major title behind closed doors at the US Open in New York, the first Grand Slam tournament possible since the pandemic. "Unfortunately I won't be able to play the French Open this year," Osaka said in posts on Instagram and Twitter. "My hamstring is still sore so I won't have enough time to prepare for the clay -- these two tournaments came too close to each other for me this year." The French Open is due to start on September 27 at Roland Garros, rescheduled from earlier in the year because of the coronavirus pandemic. The withdrawal of third-ranked Osaka means Roland Garros will be missing two of the world's top three, after reigning champion Barty said earlier this month that she wouldn't return to defend her title. The Australian said she feared participation still carried health risks, and she had not been able to train with her coach because of the state border closures in her home country. Osaka's announcement also came just hours after French Open organisers were forced to slash daily attendance from 11,500 to 5,000 as Coronavirus cases surge in France. |

The German city of Cologne will host back-to-back ATP 250 events on indoor hard while Sardinia will stage a claycourt event and Nur-Sultan in Kazakhstan will host an indoor event. The events will be on single-year licence as the ATP offers professionals the opportunity to earn money and ranking points in the wake of the coronavirus shutdown. All the events will be subject to satisfying strict health and safety, international travel and ATP event requirements. "Adding new events to the Tour calendar is a positive step given the many challenges our sport has faced this year, and I would like to thank all the event organisers on the calendar", ATP Chairman Andrea Gaudenzi said. "Our goal was to create additional opportunities for players and entertainment for our fans, and to do so in a safe and practical way. We are delighted to have tennis back on court again and these new events will help us finish the year strongly, as we build towards the season-ending ATP Finals". The Cologne first event begin on October 12, the same day as the claycourt tournament in Sardinia, while the second event begin on October 19 and the Astana Open in Nur-Sultan starts on October 26. |
