Men' s Singles : Roger Federer (2) won his 96th ATP tournament in career (20th Grand Slam and 6th Australian Open, second consecutive), defeating Marin Cilic (6) 6-2, 6-7 (5), 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 after 3h 05'

In the tenth head-to-head between this two players (the only win of the Croatian in the US Open 2014 semi-final) it was a bit fearful the start of Cilic, who struggled with his first service, with the second always attacked by the Swiss champion, able to immediately going 2-0. The ability of King Roger, at the 107th match in Melbourne, to take the time to his opponents and put them under pressure, almost without letting them breathe, have led to a series of error of the Croatian, who went down 4-0, before finally breaking the ice; but in his service turns Federer was almost unplayable and the 6-2 in just 25 minutes was the logical consequence. At the opening of the second set first moment of difficulty for the 36 year old from Basel, who cancelled two consecutive break-points before grabbing 1-1. And in the next complicated game (16 points), it was Cilic who saved one break-point after having committed three consecutive errors. Clinging to the first service, the Croatian has faced another break-point in the next service game, but he managed to lead 3-2, while on 4-4 30-40 had the courage to place a central ace with the second serve. On 4-5 the service of Federer suddenly went to sobs, with two double faults from the right to grant a set point, wasted by Cilic with a backhand slashed into the net, so the set was decided by the tie-break, where Marin (at the first match with the closed roof, a situation already experienced by Federer against Chung in the semifinal) from 3-2 for the Swiss changed pace, climbing on 6-4 with a powerful forehand on the line and then closing 7-5 with a precise smash after 1h 01', with Federer forced to lose his first set in the 2018 edition of this tournament. In third set the Swiss champion' s proud reaction did not wait too long : with a break in sixth game he went 4-2, and with the 19th ace of his match he closed the set 6-3 after 30'. Immediately at the start of the fourth set Cilic lost his serve and also canceled a 0-3 chance, which looked a lot like a match point, managing to hang on 3-3 Federer (first break suffered by the Swiss in this match, immediately followed by another), with Cilic closing the set 6-3 after 37'; in the opening game of the final set King Roger saved two break-points and then broke Cilic and went 3-0 : at that point the Croatian could not do anything to stop the race of his rival : second break for 5-1 and apotheosis with a second kick-serve in which Cilic managed only to touch the ball and even the challenge, asked more for whim than anything else, confirmed the triumph of the Swiss phenomenon, who could raise again his arms to the sky, almost in tears, equaling with 6 successes in the Slam down-under the record of Novak Djokovic and Roy Emerson, while Cilic remains with only one Slam title.

Women' s Singles : Caroline Wozniacki (2) won her 28th WTA tournament in career (first Grand Slam), defeating
Simona Halep (1) 7-6 (2), 3-6, 6-4 after 2h 49'

Wozniacki started the match better, thanks to a break in the second game (3-0). Solid and determined the Danish defended the advantage without giving a chance to Halep, a little contracted until the ninth game (after being forward 5-2 and have come two points from the set). Here suddenly the arm of the 27 year old from Odense shook and three break chances for the Romanian came together : Wozniacki saved the first two but not the third. Shortly after Simona reached the 5-5 Caroline recovered almost immediately and the set was decided at the tie-break, the first ever between these two players : Wozniacki ended up dominating it 7 points to 2 after 52'; in the second set Halep was still in trouble, forced in a very long third game (18 points) and saving four break-points, then, on 3-2, the Romanian asked for a medical time out, due to pressure problems; at the restart Simona tried to shorten the rallies as much as possible and in the eighth game a straight on the line forehand gave the break to Halep and in the next one the 26 year old from Costanta equalized the set count at the fourth opportunity after 49', with another long game of 14 points. After a break of 10 minutes (heat rule), at the resumption of the match Caroline had to recover from 0-30 on her service but then in the second game broke Simona, too often forced to rely on the second service (2-0). With a deadly third game of 18 points Halep recovered the break of disadvantage at the sixth useful ball (with the opponent who in turn has failed two for 3-0). In the fourth game another break for the Danish, who went to lead 3-1. But Halep, back again to hit strongly, especially backhand, recovered immediately on 3-3. Caroline seemed suddenly very tired, but also terrified by the idea of ​​failing again : Simona took advantage of the many mistakes of the 27 year old with her third game in a row, going to lead 4-3. This time it was Wozniacki who asked for the trainer' s intervention due to a problem with her left hamstring.
