Re: Formula 1 General Chat & Discussion

The Japanese Grand Prix(15th round of the 2013 Formula 1 World Championship)
Suzuka circuitThumb up (11-12 and 13 October)
Just seven days after the Grand Prix of Korea, the F1 season continues this week end in Japan. Suzuka is one of the most interesting tracks of the Formula One World Championship and has a long history of races. It is also the only circuit that runs both clockwise and anti-clockwise due to its unique layout: an unusual figure of eight, that requires an overpass and an underpass. This is one of the best circuit in calendar, fast and technical. In my opinion only Spa Franchorchamps is better than Suzuka. How many memories on this track: Senna and Prost with their endless challenge (1988-89-90). Michael Schumacher, in 2000 (after 21 years the world championship returns to Maranello). At Suzuka circuit you can find two large radius turns, known as the Spoon curve and the legendary 130R, both very demanding for tyres. Very difficult are also the Esses, a consecutive series of curves with rapid change of direction(from Turn 3 to curve 6). Then in uphill through a long left hander known as Dunlop Curve, before going in two tricky right-handed corners, called Degner curves. The circuit is a true challenge for drivers and cars. Tyre allocation for Suzuka Grand Prix: Pirelli will bring medium compound(white stripe) and of course hard compound(orange stripe). The most conservative choice as at Spa and Monza. Only one DRS zone: on the start/finish straight. Thumb up In 2007 and 2008, the GP of Japan took place at Fuji circuit.
Winners, Podium and pole position (last 4 editions at Suzuka).
2009: 1° Vettel – Red Bull (2° Trulli and 3° Hamilton) – fastest lap: Webber – pole: Vettel, time 1m 32.160
2010: 1° Vettel – Red Bull (2° Webber and 3° Alonso) – fastest lap: Webber – pole: Vettel, time 1m 30.785
2011: 1° Button – McLaren (2° Alonso and 3° Vettel) – fastest lap: Button – pole: Vettel, time 1m 30.466
2012: 1° Vettel – Red Bull (2° Massa and 3° Kobayashi) – fastest lap: Vettel – pole: Vettel, time 1m 30.839
Vettel always in pole position in the last four years and three victories plus a third place on Sunday.
Maybe he's the favorite?
The stats of this season(2013) after 14 races.
Winners: Vettel(8 times) Alonso and Rosberg(2); Raikkonen and Hamilton (1)
Second place: Raikkonen(6) Alonso(5); Webber(2); Vettel(1). Never a Mercedes driver in second place until now.
Third place: Hamilton(4); Grosjean(3) Vettel and Webber(2); Raikkonen Alonso and Massa(1)
Total Podium: Vettel(11); Alonso and Raikkonen(8); Hamilton(5); Webber(4); Grosjean(3); Rosberg (2); Massa(1).
Pole position: Vettel (6 times); Hamilton (5 times) – Rosberg (3)

Latest news from the F1 site

Pic, Van der Garde, Bianchi and Chilton given reprimands

Caterham’s Charles Pic and Giedo van der Garde and Marussia’s Jules Bianchi and Max Chilton have all been reprimanded by race stewards in Korea.

Bianchi and Pic received their reprimands for failing to respond to yellow flags, whilst Van der Garde and Chilton were punished for lapping too quickly during the safety-car period.

Bianchi and Pic now face automatic 10-place grid penalties at the next round in Japan, as both have accrued three reprimands this season.

Meanwhile, the stewards opted to take no further action against either McLaren’s Sergio Perez or Force India’s Adrian Sutil, who were also the subject of post-race investigations.

Perez had been placed under investigation on suspicion of forcing Force India’s Paul di Resta off track and for a separate tangle with Ferrari’s Felipe Massa, whilst Sutil was investigated over his collision with Mark Webber which led to the Red Bull driver retiring from the race.

Third pole in a row for Vettel in Korea :
Sebastian Vettel earned the 42nd pole position of his F1 career in Korea on Saturday afternoon. He clocked a 1:37.202 in his Red Bull. Lewis Hamilton qualified second with a time of 1:37.420 in his Mercedes. Mark Webber was third fastest with a lap of 1:37.464 in his Red Bull.
Qualifying 1
Sauber driver Esteban Gutierrez was the first driver to venture out as the 20-minute Q1 began. He was on Pirelli's medium compound tires. He clocked the first time as well, a 1:41.058. The ambient temperature at the start of the one-hour session was 77 degrees Fahrenheit (25 degrees Celsius), and the track temperature was 91 degrees Fahrenheit (33 degrees Celsius.) 6 minutes into the session, Jenson Button turned a 1:40.169 in his McLaren shod with the medium compound rubber. But Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg soon beat that with a 1:39.415. Lewis Hamilton slotted into second with a time of 1:39.737 in his Mercedes. 9 minutes into the session, Fernando Alonso took over second after setting a 1:39.504 in his Ferrari. 10 minutes into the session, Hamilton topped the times with a 1:38.574. Sebastian Vettel, who had been quickest in FP3, was just heading out for his first run as was his Red Bull teammate Mark Webber. 13 minutes into the session, Gutierrez turned a 1:38.725 on the super soft Pirellis, which moved him up to second spot. Vettel, on mediums, turned a 1:39.199 to move into third. Webber, also on mediums, topped that with a 1:39.138.
With 2 minutes remaining in the session, Romain Grosjean clocked his first time of the session, a 1:39.176, which put his Lotus seventh on the list. With less than 2 minutes remaining in the session, Hulkenberg, his Sauber on super softs, went to the top with a 1:38.427. Rosberg, also on super softs, beat that with a 1:38.418. Then Kimi Raikkonen turned a 1:38.341 in his Lotus. The top 10 at the end of Q1 were: Raikkonen, Rosberg, Hulkenberg, Alonso, Daniel Ricciardo (Toro Rosso), Hamilton, Vettel, Gutierrez, Jenson Button (McLaren) and Felipe Massa (Ferrari.) Webber, who had not switched to the super softs, was 15th and thus just made the cut into Q2, as did Paul di Resta (Force India) who had traffic on his lap and scraped in at the 16th spot. The six drivers eliminated at the end of Q1 were: Williams teammates Valterri Bottas and Pastor Maldonado. Caterham teammates Charles Pic and Guido van der Garde, and Marussia teammates Jules Bianchi and Max Chilton.
Qualifying 2
Nobody headed out as the green lights came on to start the 15 minute session. 12 minutes into the session, Ricciardo became the first. He was on the red side-walled Pirelli super softs. Everybody else was on used super softs as well. With 8 minutes remaining in the session, Raikkonen set the fast time of 1:39.236, but Alonso beat that with a 1:38.504 and Hamilton beat that with a 1:37.824.
With 6 minutes remaining in the session, the top 6 were: Hamilton, Rosberg, Alonso, Gutierrez, Massa and Button. With 3 minutes remaining in the session, Webber completed his first run and clocked a 1:37.840 which put him second. Moments later Vettel finished his first flying lap and went to the top with a 1:37.569. A number of drivers fitted new sets of super softs for their final Q2 attempt. But they could not beat the times of Vettel, Hamilton and Webber who held the top three spots The top 10 at the end of Q2 were: Vettel, Hamilton, Webber, Hulkenberg, Alonso, Rosberg, Grosjean, Raikkonen, Massa and Gutierrez. The six drivers eliminated at the end of Q2 were: Gutierrez, Sergio Perez (McLaren), Button, Ricciardo, Adrian Sutil (Force India), di Resta and Jean-Eric Vergne (Toro Rosso.)
Qualifying 3
And so it was on to the final session that would set the top 10 grid places. Wherever Webber qualified, he would move back 10 places because of his penalty for hitching a ride in Alonso's Ferrari in Singapore. Webber got the ball rolling. Rosberg followed him out. Everybody was on the super soft Pirellis. Webber set the bar at 1:37.464 which beat Rosberg's 1:37.679. Hamilton grabbed second with a 1:37.508, and then Vettel beat them all with a 1:37.202. So the order was now Vettel, Webber, Hamilton, Grosjean and Rosberg. The other five drivers had not made a first run yet with four minutes to go. With 3 minutes remaining in the session, everybody was in the pits. Then, one by one, the drivers headed out for one final go. It was a bit of an anticlimax, however. Webber could not go faster and dropped to third as Hamilton improved to a 1:37.420. Grosjean, Rosberg, Alonso, Massa, Hulkenberg, Gutierrez and Raikkonen rounded out the top 10.

Vettel moves ahead in 3rd practice :
Sebastian Vettel topped the timesheets during final practice for the Korean Grand Prix on Saturday morning. The Red Bull driver, who clocked an effort of 1:37.881 with the Super Soft tyres, led team-mate Mark Webber by 0.137 seconds, as Mercedes drivers Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton watched on from third and fourth. Following a season-long trend, the first 45 minutes of the hour-long session was used for Medium-tyre runs. Hamilton, who suffered a slight delay in the early minutes due to vibrations on his brake pedal, was again the man in charge during this race preparation phase, continuing the form that saw him top both outings on Friday.
But when the switch to Super Softs arrived, Red Bull moved to the fore. Webber was the first of the frontrunners to head out for a timed attempt, initially clocking a 1:38.132 before lowering his benchmark to 1:38.018. Vettel then made his mark, finding an improvement of 1.2 seconds between compounds and breaking the 1m37s barrier. Rosberg and Hamilton thus fell back, the pair over four tenths of a second adrift of the ultimate pace. Ferrari's Fernando Alonso and Lotus driver Romain Grosjean followed in fifth and sixth, although the latter has more to yield after a mistake in the final sector. Felipe Massa, who ended the Medium tyre period a lowly 15th, enjoyed a better level of performance on the softer rubber, taking seventh position ahead of Kimi Räikkönen. The final top ten positions narrowly went to Nico Hülkenberg and Jenson Button, with the upper midfield battle set to be an extremely close one this weekend. At the tail end of the order, Caterham again demonstrated more pace than key rivals Marussia.

Lewis Hamilton stays on top in second F1 practice :
Lewis Hamilton completed a clean sweep of fastest times in Korean Grand Prix Friday practice as Mercedes again took the fight to Red Bull. In another strong hint that the champion team will face tougher opposition this weekend than of late, Hamilton not only set the outright pace with a 1m38.673s, but was also very positive about tyre life over later long runs. Sebastian Vettel was 0.108 seconds down on Hamilton in second place. The runaway world championship leader, chasing a fourth consecutive Formula 1 race win this weekend, waited much longer than anyone else to move to super-soft tyres, jumping to second when he did so. That denied Mercedes a one-two, with Vettel edging Nico Rosberg by 0.016s. Mark Webber had been Hamilton's main rival early on, as the pair swapped first place several times. The second Red Bull ended up back in fourth, but was within 0.063s of its sister car. Felipe Massa was Ferrari's pacesetter in fifth, two places ahead of team-mate Fernando Alonso. Romain Grosjean's Lotus was in between them.
The second Lotus of Kimi Raikkonen got straight back out after its morning crash and went eighth. Despite a cockpit niggle, Jenson Button was ninth for McLaren, ahead of very-closely matched Force India duo Adrian Sutil and Paul di Resta, who were just 0.001s apart. No one repeated Raikkonen's trip into the wall, but both Caterham's Charles Pic and Sauber's Esteban Gutierrez had spins during the afternoon while Alonso visited the grass on his final lap.

Lewis Hamilton sets FP1 pace as Raikkonen crashes :
Lewis Hamilton set the pace in opening practice for the Korean Grand Prix as Kimi Raikkonen suffered a big crash at the end of the session. Mercedes driver Hamilton posted a lap of 1m39.630s to beat championship leader Sebastian Vettel by 0.037s, although the Red Bull driver had all the fastest sectors of the session. Team-mate Mark Webber was third quickest and the only other man to lap in the 1m39s. Nico Rosberg in the Mercedes was fourth ahead of McLaren's Jenson Button and Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso. Romain Grosjean was seventh ahead of Raikkonen, who ended the session with a heavy crash. As the session was coming to a close, Raikkonen lost control of his Lotus and crashed heavily at the final corner, causing substantial damage to his car.
The Finn was able to walk away from the crash, but the team faces a race against the time to have the car ready for second practice.
Although perfect weather conditions welcomed the drivers at the start of the session, it took over 15 minutes before the first lap time was set by Rodolfo Gonzalez. The Marussia driver had the track basically to himself for the first half hour, but that did not stop him from enduring drama, the Venezuelan losing control of his car and crashing against the barriers at Turn 13. He lost his front wing and returned to the pits, leaving the circuit empty for several more minutes. McLaren's Sergio Perez and Button joined Gonzalez in the timesheets with over 35 minutes of the session gone as the action finally began to pick up. Perez was the pacesetter for several minutes as most of the frontrunners continues to wait in their garages for the track conditions to improve. Mercedes' Rosberg relegated Perez to second at the 50-minute mark, the German posting a 1m41.498s that was soon bettered by less than a tenth by Alonso. Rosberg fought back seconds later to regain the top spot, the Mercedes driver followed by Vettel and Raikkonen, all of them lapping in the 1m40s. Hamilton became the first man to lap in the 1m39s with half an hour left, the Briton outpacing his team-mate by nearly half a second as Webber jumped up to second behind the Briton. Hamilton's time would remain unbeaten until the end, although Vettel moved up to second with a minute of the session left. Apart from Gonzalez's and Raikkonen's crashes, the session included spins from James Calado and Hamilton, as well as several offs without further consequences.
Felipe Massa's session was curtailed by a puncture that meant the Brazilian spent most of the 90 minutes in the pits, the Ferrari driver completing his first timed lap with just 12 minutes to go.
