Virtualdub 1_17_3 is experimental so use at your own risk. Its free.
Been experimenting using virtualdub to capture web streams via screen capture in capture mode. A fast (Windows OS) computer is the first requirement, preferably dualcore or above.
Can copy any format as it is the screen which is captured.
First find out dimensions of web stream, some are up to 640x480. reduce your screen resolution to smallest, it makes the web stream fill more of the screen.
Then set custom format to next largest, use offset (in source) to centre stream in capture window. Compression to your choice of codec, set a time limit for capture in stop conditions (no way to exit capture manually), framerate to 25fps in settings, set file name and location. then capture.
PS I can't capture sound with virtualdub, it does not see my sound card, so I used the windows sound recorder in parallel.
