@misterG

I'd check the integrity of your wmv files using AsfBin, Here:-[Versteckter Link - Registrierung notwendig]

Re: Tutorial: Webstreams, lossless conversion; editing with Avidemux

Hi guys, hoping someone can help...

I have several GB of vids I recorded using Debut screen capture back in 2010 when I didn't know what I was doing...

they're really poor quality, not just cos they were screen cap, but because I was running too many applications on my pc at the time, so they tend to be a bit 'stuttery'. there's also lots of them as initially had it set to 10 min max and have poor attention span and was forever jumping screens and applications...

but the main problem is that they're so big

they recorded as wmv files (which was the only output for the free version of debut I had) and typically 100 MB is about 6 mins

as I didn't know what I was doing, they all include sound, which is me, the tv, stereo, making coffee etc - anything but the soundtrack from the stream which was muted anyway...

so what I want to do is convert them to mp4 in the best quality possible (guess too much to expect that I can improve the 'jerkiness'?) but with no sound, and then edit to remove all the frustrating bits where I was flicking streams or applications

so when I saw the info on Avidemux, thought that was the tool!

have downloaded and it opens & seems to run ok, but when I try to open one of my wmv files it doesn't complete indexing and I get an error (internal error finding codec). I Ok this and get crash error & when I Ok this, avidemux closes down. If I open it again, I get a crash file warning, which when Ok'd gives me an exception report... example below.

Does this mean I can't convert wmv, or is there a problem with the files I've tried (100% failure so far) or do i need to somehow find the right codecs to update avidemux?

Any help appreciated.
G

the complete image is shown in the post and the link is just a kind of advertisement for postimg. org (sadly added when using the offered forum code Sad).

and for the sound quality I wouldn't use more than 48 or 64 because the original Astra is like this (and even mono iirc).

PS: the original image link is of course visible while quoting a post.

Re: Tutorial: Webstreams, lossless conversion; editing with Avidemux

A sample for .mp4 container. You could also use AAC instead of mp3. I suggest a bitrate like your source has.
Of course it only works if your recording has sound to begin with. Tongue

thanks for help dackelThumb up
The audio problem usually occurs if you choose an Audio codec which is incompatible with the video format. Unfortunately Avidemux doesn't have presets for Audio, you need to select from the pull down menu and then configure the bit rate.
For MP4 Videos it should work with AAC, MP3, MP2 or MP1, I usually use AAC with 64kBit/s.
If you create your videos in another format you'll have too google respectively use try and error which Audio formats are compatible.

2. Avidemux 2.6.1 runs stable under Win 7!

5. Linux: stable like always, but most of the viewers don't know much about Linuxology........Big Grin

Well, if I had a penny everytime I'm wrong... Big Grin

Thanks for your feedback and the useful informations about the stability of various Avidemux-versions on Windows!

In encoding-mode Avidemux can perfectly cut on B- and P-frames as well and not only on keyframes. I've encoded a short 30s video from MPEG2 to MPEG4-AVC, removed some parts every 10 seconds and the cuts were not on keyframes!

Exact frame-accuracy is not a problem for Avidemux in "encoding-mode". Is it necessary to cut on other than keyframes? Mostly not, but it can be done and Avidemux can do this well. So, I wouldn't say only I-frames should be used for cuts, but I agree that it can make things easier sometimes. I don't wanna say anything regarding your ETV-comments, except ETV is very "special" and that's why it must be such a challenge to edit ETV-recordings... Big Grin

Only the strong survive... Big Grin

If you use Avidemux in "copy-mode", then the cuts should be only placed on I-frames (Only I-frames can be decoded on their own). If you try to cut on B/P-frames, then you end up with a pixelated, mostly green-colored screen for a few frames until the next I-frame arrives. Insofar that's why the keyframes are quite important when you are not encoding your files - unless you want to ruin your videos of course. Big Grin

Re: Tutorial: Webstreams, lossless conversion; editing with Avidemux

My advice is not to use Avidemux.

Why? you might ask,

I.E.

Take a h264.flv file and make a duplicate/copy of file using copy for video and audio and save to flv.

you'll see.Sad

Dackel0401 wrote:If you're encoding your videos (for example MPEG2 to MP4) with Avidemux, you can cut on every frame. Only the first cut in the video must be on an I-frame. If you're using Avidemux in "copy-mode", then you are limited to cut on I-frames only. I would highly recommend to use the stable 2.5.x versions of Avidemux. The 2.6.x versions of Avidemux are still "buggy beasts", but can handle MPEG4 significantly better than the 2.5 versions. One advantage ok, but I'm not sure that it's helpful when the application crashes all the time... Big Grin
I am using the latest 2.5.6-build for Arch-Linux and it runs "rockstable". It's my favourite software to edit/cut and encode videos and so far I had never any problems with it. I even edit my ETV-Videos with Avidemux and sometimes there are between 150-200 cuts necessary (because of the very "nervous camerawork") - no problem at all for Avidemux.

For free shows (especially ETV!):
Unfortunately the girls don't begin or end a strip with i-frames. And the nervous camera always cuts at p-frames and Lilian comes around with the b-frames.Big GrinBig GrinBig Grin
For such a mess I use "Videopad". You can cut at every frame you want. And no problems with sound.
