TV Recordings - Quality Over Quantity?

Right guys i would like to know what you think ie: a 15 - 20 minute video at 500MB+ at good quality or a 40 minute video at the same MB and low quality, i record to a "RAM DISC" so i only have 4 options on my settings, btw 500MB is just a example not that i will make many at that size, all recordings was taken from the same show with holly yesterday afternoon, from Red Light Lounge.

PS: i was thinking of calling this thread does size really matter, but some may of got the wrong idea Blush

Here's examples from all 4 settings all run for 5 minutes, the first not really a option due to the file size, but quality is very good to say the least Smile

EXAMPLE 1, [Versteckter Link - Registrierung notwendig] 358.38MB

EXAMPLE 2, [Versteckter Link - Registrierung notwendig] 169.48MB

EXAMPLE 3, [Versteckter Link - Registrierung notwendig] 101.53MB

[Versteckter Link - Registrierung notwendig]

Example 4, [Versteckter Link - Registrierung notwendig] 70.99MB

As you will see i can get good quality but very big file size, so which would you prefer High Quality, Medium Quality or Low Quality so keeping file size down and longer video's?

Also does anybody know of a Application where i can get the file size down without loosing quality?, bearing in mind i use a "Mac" so very few options.

Any input appreciated

Thanks

Re: TV Recordings - Quality Over Quantity?

Hey dazaman!
If I get it right, you can directly record with this 4 options?
Or you record lossless and convert it later?
If Opinion 1: Better quality is the best
If opinion 2: There is much to adjust, so you can get a good quality by having small filesize.

Hi dazamanSmile

For me like many others, no contest, if it's possible, always privilege high resolution quality or direct stream copy.
Thanks for your implication, your posts, your thanks...

Research your source, Redlight 1 broadcasts 11390V 544x576 2Mbps vid 128Kbps aud.
Study the manual of your software thouroughly (Handbrake)and tune the presets.
Try to keep aspect ratio and not to resize if possible.

A quick example recorded this evening 1:20Mins

Re: TV Recordings - Quality Over Quantity?

I would prefer high quality where possible

Re: TV Recordings - Quality Over Quantity?

I was wondering exactly the same, although my case is different because when I record webstreams there's not much I can tweak with Replay Video Capture (700 MB = 72 min with WMV9 Thumb down video codec).

In general, I would think an optimal filesize ratio would be around 10 Mbytes per minute - of course the key factors are resolution, the codec used and the resulting bitrate/compression rate.
I wouldn't want to watch anything below 640x360.
And I wouldn't want to keep stored in my HDD a 20 min / 500 MB vid unless it's REALLY worth it Tongue
If I were to record off TV, I would go for a medium res for longer shows I don't plan to edit - and higher res if I planned to make edited "highlight" vids.
(P.S.: but I would ALWAYS record Mica and Dannii Harwood on extra high res In love )

Re: TV Recordings - Quality Over Quantity?

The file size has no importance for me ( I've a very fast internet connection, premium accounts and I use JDownloader) I prefer therefore, the very good quality. but I 'll agree with the majority of you.

Re: TV Recordings - Quality Over Quantity?

Medium quality (2 or 3) option is the best. My opinion ofc. Lets see what other ppl prefer. I have no idea of mac so I cant help but I dont think that you can minimize the size without minimizing the quality.
