Alien-looking shrimp of the desert appear in Central Australia after flooding rains ... Freak rain in Australia’s outback has produced an outlandish sight: millions of shrimps wriggling across what are normally bone-dry deserts. [Verstecktes Bild - Registrierung notwendig] The crustaceans, which can grow to 7.5cm (3in) long, are filling desert pools and puddles after rains that come once in every 50 years. They were so severe that Uluru, near Alice Springs, was closed to tourists and wide areas of the outback were flooded. [Verstecktes Bild - Registrierung notwendig] The shield shrimp, Triops australiensis – is a prehistoric marine creature with a remarkable life cycle that enables it to survive in some of the world’s harshest environments. Its eggs can endure for at least a decade without moisture, being blown across deserts or buried beneath them. [Verstecktes Bild - Registrierung notwendig] Their morphology has not changed the basic features from the times of the Triassic period - it was 220-230 million years ago. At that time only there were dinosaurs, flowering plants did not exist, and in the world was the only continent - Pangaea. |

Someone's made a watch out of cheese and it's selling for nearly £1 million ... The moon isn't made of cheese, but this Swiss watch is. Part of it, anyway. [Verstecktes Bild - Registrierung notwendig] Its outer casing, which encircles the abstract red and white flag Swiss in the centre, is made from a cheese called Vacherin Mont d'Or medaille d'or. [Verstecktes Bild - Registrierung notwendig] The cheese is superb melted on top of crumpets. It's made in winter in a small Swiss village. For the watch, it's been fortified with resin to withstand use and age. Swiss watchmaker H.Moser crafted the timepiece as a protest against new legislation. It's a satirical take on new rules placed on the country who use the 'Swiss made' moniker. [Verstecktes Bild - Registrierung notwendig] The dial is smoked red, with the four white lacquered indexes. They each indicate four quarters of an hour. And the detail far surpasses the watch and name itself – even the price tag pays homage to Switzerland's watchmaking roots. The price in francs, 1,081,291, is a reference to the date the Swiss Confederation was set up, back on August 1 1291. |
