Just one more SMS for today

Perhaps I should dedicate this SMS - that's Small Mitwoch Sermon in case you were wondering to the recently departed Glassy who no doubt would have written many of the words that now follow.

Personally, I never try to criticize content as there are many parameters that will affect that. And these parameters can, and do, change as an evening progreses. But my critique will always be centered on the delivery because if the tv get that wrong then the content does not matter.

Let's first look at the recent history. For some reason, certain operators do not have a clue how to set up a camera and you end up with over-saturated colours. There is a rumour floating around that a certain tv channel proprietor was so disgusted at the vision he saw one night that he was compelled to immediatley contact his charges thousands of miles away to put it right or not bother to come in the next day. Think you know what option they chose.

Example pars deux. Give a boy a new toy and he must play with it much too often and without reading the instructions on how to use it properly. And this autumn's new toy seems to be the smoke machine. Can be used effectively. But effectively does not mean filling a studio and having a camera point at it especially with a bright light behind so now you end up with an over-exposed picture. Run that effect during a VIP performance and there is little wonder why those dry up as no one is gonna send more if there is any risk that their visual delight is going to be ruined.

And on to last night. Tell me if I am wrong but due to a brief appearance right at the start and one hand appearing during one of the green-room cut-aways it was Sandra acting as Regie. Now no disrespect to her as some of her day shows have been quite effective.

But something was missing last night. Was there a cameraman present as for much of the first few hours most views were from a semi-distant static camera. Occasionally, the vision-mixer would change to another one for a few seconds but even that seemed to have a fixed view as the camera seemed to be focusing all the time on the lower part of the girls body.

And it was all oh so different only a few brief hours before. Good moving camera and the models using it to full advantage.

Maybe this was just one bad night. I just hope so.
