2020 AUSTRALIAN OPEN - DAY 14 (LAST) :
Results Finals : Men' s Singles : Novak Djokovic (2) won his 78th ATP tournament in career (17th Grand Slam and 8th Australian Open), defeating Dominic Thiem (5) 6-4, 4-6, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 after 3h 58' ![]() Nole' s great experience at these levels shows immediately, with the Serbian breaking his rival in his first service game. Thiem, however, breaks Djokovic back in seventh game, but then, with a bloody double-fault in 10th game, gives Djokovic the set 6-4 after 52'; the Austrian does not give up, wins the physical clash and, thanks to the decisive break in 9th game, takes the second set 6-4 after 50'; Nole seems to physically turn off in third set, gets nervous with the referee for two "warnings" and pays with two initial breaks that deliver the third set 6-2 after 46' to a cold and precise Thiem; when, however, he seems on the brink, Djokovic rises and, with a break in eighth game, he wins the fourth set 6-3 after 42'; the match goes to fifth set, where the Austrian seems to choke, losing his serve in third game : this is the decisive break that gives Nole the triumph in Rod Laver Arena; for the Serbian it is the eighthtitle in Melbourne, where he never lost a final and he gets closer in Major titles to Roger Federer (20) and Rafael Nadal (19); with this success, Djokovic will return from tomorrow world' s N° 1. Curiously, Nole has won his last two Slams (Wimbledon and Australian Open) both in five sets and he also becomes the first player to win a Major in three different decades in the Open era, while Dominic Thiem lost his third Slam final, the first on hard after the two consecutive at Roland Garros. 2020 AUSTRALIAN OPEN - DAY 13 :
Results Finals : Women' s Singles : Sofia Kenin (14) won her fourth WTA tournament in career (first Grand Slam and third on hard), defeating Garbiñe Muguruza 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 after 2h 03' ![]() Impressive start for Kenin in first set, with the American who won six of the first seven points of the match, but, on 0-30 in the second game, Muguruza "woke up", winning four points in a row and, in the next game (lasted 14 points), at the second chance, she broke the American and then, despite two double-faults in a row, confirmed the break, going 3-1, then, in the seventh game, Kenin bravely canceled 4 double-break opportunities (the first three in a row) and, in the following game, she broke the Spanish back, going 4-4. Taking advantage of a couple of incisive returns on the second service of her opponent, Muguruza took again a break of advantage, closing the set 6-4 after 53'; Kenin didn' t give up and started the second set by winning her first two service games and, in the fourth game, she broke Muguruza, who suddenly became not very incisive and convinced, going 4-1. Garbiñe, a little abandoned by her first serve (and with some back problems, for which she needed a medical time-out), was no longer able to stem the impetuosity of the American and, with a second break, Sofia balanced the match, with a 6-2 after 33'; in the decisive set, Kenin continued to be aggressive while Muguruza continued to struggle against an opponent who could cover the field very well and make very little mistakes. In fifth game, Sofia managed to save three break-points in a row, by winning five consecutive points, while, in the next game, it was Garbiñe to lose her serve with a double-fault, allowing the American to go up 4-2. Muguruza gave up on nerves and for Kenin the dream came true, also due to the eighth double-fault of the Spaniard; thanks to this result, from Monday, Kenin will enter for the first time in the "Top 10" at N° 7 (the youngest in her country in the last 21 years, before her there was, in 1999, Serena Williams), becoming the first American in the ranking, while Muguruza (former world' s N° 1 and now N° 32), who aimed to win her third Slam on three different surfaces (after Roland Garros 2016 and Wimbledon 2017), can console herself for her first Major final lost by returning closer to the "Top 15", since, from Monday, she will be N° 16.
