2022 FRENCH OPEN - DAY 15 (LAST) :

Men' s Singles : Rafael Nadal (5) won his 92nd ATP tournament in career (22nd Grand Slam, 14th French Open and 63rd on red clay), defeating
Casper Ruud (8) 6-3, 6-3, 6-0 after 2h 18'

After a comfortable hold and a break to start, it looked like Nadal would cruise through the first round, but Ruud came back with a break of his own to get back on serve. The Spanish champion, though, broke the Norwegian for a second time in two tries and did indeed cruise from there, closing first set 6-3 after 48'; Nadal fell behind by a break early in the second set and would trail 3-1, but, in a not-so-stunning turn of events, given his history at Roland Garros, Nadal would not lose another game, storming back in dominant fashion and winning five consecutive games to win the set with another 6-3 after 54' : throughout the match, Nadal made Ruud pay for missing first serves, and that was especially evident in the second set, when Nadal won nine of 12 points off Ruud's second serve, with the set ending on Ruud's first double-fault of the match; the Mallorcan was truly unrelenting in the third set, and Ruud was clearly worn down and out of answers, as so many have been before against Nadal at Roland Garros, so the match mercifully ended with a 6-0 after only 30', with Nadal putting his head in his hands and crying as the weight of yet another French Open title hit him, while Ruud, the first Norwegian ever to play a Slam Final, can console with his best ranking of world' s N° 6.

Women' s Singles : Iga Swiatek (1) won her 9th WTA tournament in career (second Grand Slam, both French Open, and fourth on red clay), defeating
Cori Gauff (18) 6-1, 6-3

Swiatek started the match very strongly, breaking the American twice in a row and going 4-0 after only 19', closing then the first set 6-1 at second set-point with another break after 32'; in second set, Gauff tried to get into the game, breaking her opponent for the first time in the match in the first game and going 2-0, but Swiatek immediately recovered and, with two consecutive breaks, went 5-2, closing then the match in triumph 6-3 at first match-point, scoring the 35th consecutive victory in this extraordinary, for her, 2022 (which equals the longest streak in the WTA circuit in the 2000s, made by Venus Williams in 2000), leaving only one set in the all tournament (against the surprising Chinese teenager Qinwen Zheng) and just 33 games in total and becoming the tenth player in activity to win two titles at Roland Garros in the Open era, since 1968, the fourth youngest to reach this milestone, behind only Monica Seles, Steffi Graf and Chris Evert, and the youngest double Grand Slam champion since 19 y.o. Maria Sharapova, who won her second US Open in 2006, while Gauff (who played her first career Slam Final) can console herself with the memories of an excellent tournament, which, from Monday, will lift her to the N° 13 in the WTA ranking.
