Pastor Maldonado : 15th place Mark Webber beats Sebastian Vettel to pole: Mark Webber ended Red Bull team-mate Sebastian Vettel's qualifying supremacy as he beat the German to Japanese Grand Prix pole. Vettel was hobbled by a loss of KERS on his first Q3 lap and was 0.4 seconds adrift of Webber's provisional pole effort. The system was successfully reset for Vettel's second run but he could not improve enough to depose Webber, who then improved his pole time to 1m30.915s. The result was not only Webber's first pole of 2013, but the first time he had outqualified Vettel all year. Lewis Hamilton won a very tight battle for third in his Mercedes, edging out Romain Grosjean's Lotus and Felipe Massa's Ferrari. Nico Rosberg was 0.144s slower than team-mate Hamilton in sixth place. Fernando Alonso was only eighth quickest, 0.3s off Massa and pushed back a further place by Nico Hulkenberg's flying Sauber. Kimi Raikkonen again struggled for qualifying speed, lapping 0.319s slower than Grosjean as he ended up five places adrift. Jenson Button's McLaren rounded off the top 10. Q2 was extraordinarily close, with barely half a second covering second to 14th places. Sergio Perez ended up on the wrong side of the cut-off in 11th, just ahead of Paul di Resta. The Scot had a much better qualifying session than Force India team-mate Adrian Sutil, who picked up a gearbox-change penalty following his morning crash and then struggled for speed. He was only 17th fastest and was eliminated in Q1. The main piece of Q1 drama was a bizarre fire on both rear brakes of Jean-Eric Vergne's Toro Rosso. The Frenchman had to park on the exit of the hairpin and the session was briefly red-flagged so marshals could deal with the fire safely. That left Vergne 18th, while team-mate Daniel Ricciardo only managed two places higher as he trailed the Q2 pack. Those dramas helped Williams to an encouraging 13th and 15th with Valtteri Bottas and Pastor Maldonado. They were split by Esteban Gutierrez, whose Sauber fleetingly caught fire in the pit garage halfway through Q1. There was no damage and he was able to continue qualifying. Marussia's Max Chilton produced the best qualifying performance of his F1 career so far to beat the Caterhams and his team-mate Jules Bianchi to 19th place. Both Charles Pic and Bianchi have 10-place grid penalties for Korean GP incidents so should share the back row. Kind Regards Shaky-Schumi |

1. Mark Webber - Red Bull Racing - 1:32.053 - 2. Lewis Hamilton - Mercedes GP - 1:32.187 + 0.134 3. Nico Rosberg - Mercedes GP - 1:32.355 + 0.302 4. Romain Grosjean - Lotus - 1:32.707 + 0.654 5. Paul di Resta - Force India - 1:33.660 + 1.607 16. Esteban Gutierrez - Sauber - 1:33.732 + 1.679 17. Valtteri Bottas - Williams - 1:33.955 + 1.902 18. Adrian Sutil - Force India - 1:34.773 + 2.720 19. Giedo van der Garde - Caterham - 1:35.473 + 3.420 20. Charles Pic - Caterham - 1:35.518 + 3.465 21. Max Chilton - Marussia F1 Team - 1:35.844 + 3.791 22. Jules Bianchi - Marussia F1 Team - 1:39.378 + 7.325 Webber on top as Vettel hits trouble: Mark Webber was quickest in the final practice session for Red Bull, a tenth of a second faster than Lewis Hamilton. However Sebastian Vettel was unable to complete a qualifying simulation on the softer medium tyres at the end of the session due to a KERS problem on his car. The two Mercedes drivers were next-quickest, Hamilton beating Webber’s first sector time with his final run. Romain Grosjean was fourth despite having done his medium-tyre lap earlier in the session. Lotus pursued a different arrangement for practice with Kimi Raikkonen doing high-fuel running at the end of practice having been unable to do so yesterday. The Ferraris were fifth and sixth with Jenson Button’s McLaren almost matching their pace on the medium tyre. Adrian Sutil was the latest driver to fall victim to the demanding Suzuka course. The Force India driver lost control of his car at the exit of Spoon Curve and knocked his front nose off on the barrier at the inside of the corner. That bend posed problems for several drivers including both the Ferrari pilots who were visibly struggling with oversteer at the exit. A change in wind direction meant drivers now had a tailwind to contend with there and on the pit straight. Lap times improved by almost two seconds compared with yesterday. Hamilton noted during the session the track was now offering “more grip”. Kind Regards Shaky-Schumi |

brudgon wrote:practice2 The Land of the Rising Red Bull : While the Mercedes duo of Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg were quickest in Free Practice 1, Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber rose to the challenge and topped the times in Free Practice 2. Vettel turned a lap time of 1:33.852 to beat Webber's time of 1:34.020. The ambient air temperature at the start of the 90-minute session was 84 degrees Fahrenheit (29 degrees Celsius), and the track temperature was 106 degrees Fahrenheit (41 degrees Celsius.) Pastor Maldonado got things underway as he did a practice start at pit exit in his Williams. The team was still investigating why his left rear wheel came off during FP1. Jules Bianchi had crashed his Marussia in FP1 and the crew could not repair it in time for FP2 so he watched from the pits. As in FP1, Maldonado set the first time in FP2: 1:36.722. Nico Hulkenberg (Sauber) sliced ahead with a 1:36.625, but then Daniel Ricciardo beat that with a 1:35.920 in his Toro Rosso. Also as in FP1, everybody was running Pirelli's hard compound slick. 8 minutes into the session, Sebastian Vettel topped the times with a 1:34.746 in his Red Bull. 10 minutes into the session, Nico Rosberg, Mercedes, beat that with a 1:34.690. Moments later his teammates Lewis Hamilton moved into second with a 1:34.726. 11 minutes into the session, Maldonado planted his Williams gently into the barriers at Turn 9. And then Vettel retook first with a 1:34.487. 16 minutes into the session, Mark Webber posted his first time – a 1:34.693 – which put the Red Bull driver third. 17 minutes into the session, Sergio Perez slid wide and crashed his McLaren backwards into the barriers at Turn 13. The car then flicked and slammed sideways into the tire-walls. He radioed in that he was okay. 20 minutes into the session, everybody was in the pits except the unlucky Perez and Maldonado. The action resumed and Hulkenberg slid off the track. He said that the car was very floaty, very light. 30 minutes into the session, the top six were: Vettel, Rosberg, Webber, Hamilton, Jenson Button and Fernando Alonso . Valtteri Bottas (Williams) was the first driver to start out on the medium compound Pirelli. Webber and Rosberg then went for a run on the mediums. So did Fernando Alonso, who clipped a curb and spun at Turn 9. Webber topped the times with a 1:34.020 and Rosberg clocked a 1:34.114. 35 minutes into the session, now Vettel was on the mediums and he stopped the clocks at 1:33.852. Hamilton, on mediums, could not do better than a 1:34.442 which put him fourth. 40 minutes into the session, the runs on the medium tires continued. At the halfway point the top six were: Vettel, Webber, Rosberg, Kimi Raikkonen (Lotus), Romain Grosjean (Lotus) and Hamilton. Having set their quick times, the teams and drivers now concentrated on long runs with both the medium and hard compound Pirellis to see how the tires degraded over a number of laps and with heavy fuel loads. 54 minutes into the session, Raikkonen spun his Lotus into the sand trap at Turn 7. He got stuck and the car had to be hoisted out. At the one hour mark the top six remained: Vettel, Webber, Rosberg, Raikkonen, Grosjean and Hamilton. With 28 minutes remaining in the session, everybody who still had a car running except for Charles Pic was out on the track. Pic had slid off the track earlier in his Marussia. The race pace runs continued. With 23 minutes remaining in the session, Rosberg complained about tire vibrations and his engineer told him to pit and the team would fit the other tires on his car. He was soon back on the track and again Pic remained the only driver not to venture out. The race prep work ground on as the session wound down. It was busy out there. Paul di Resta had a quick spin in his Force India at the chicane. Webber got upset at di Resta a couple of laps later when they ended up needing the same bit of road. With 12 minutes remaining in the session, Adrian Sutil (Force India) was the only one not running. With 3 minutes remaining in the session, Sutil was the only one not running. With 2 minutes remaining in the session, Ricciardo was the only one not running. The top 10 in FP2 were: Vettel, Webber, Rosberg, Raikkonen, Grosjean, Hamilton, Ricciardo, Felipe Massa , Button and Alonso. Kind Regards Shaky-Schumi |

brudgon wrote:practice1 Suzuka Silver : Mercedes Silver Arrows teammates Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg topped the times in Free Practice 1 for the Japanese Grand Prix. The clocked times of 1:34.157 and 1:34.487 respectively. Red Bull teammates Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber went third and fourth quickest with laps of 1:34.768 and 1:34.787. They were the only four drivers to get below the one minute 35 second barrier. The ambient air temperature at the start of the 90-minute session was 82 degrees Fahrenheit (28 degrees Celsius), and the track temperature was 97 degrees Fahrenheit (36 degrees Celsius.) Mark Webber was the first out on the 18-turn 3.608-mile (5.807-km) Suzuka circuit. The Red Bull team had replaced his chassis that had been burned and damaged in the collision with Adrian Sutil in Korea. The engine and gearbox, however, were the same ones as he'd raced with in Korea. Daniel Ricciardo, who will replace Webber at Red Bull in 2014, was the first driver to complete 2 laps. But they were only installation laps and he did not set a lap time. Pirelli's dry weather tire options this weekend are the hard compound with the orange sidewalls and the mediums with the white sidewalls. Everybody was out on the hards in the early laps of the session. 10 minutes into the session, everybody had completed their installation laps and Lewis Hamilton was the only driver on the circuit, but he soon steered his Mercedes down into the pits. Everybody stayed in the pits until 16 minutes into the session when Pastor Maldonado's Williams shattered the peace and quiet that had been hanging over the circuit. As Maldonado came steaming down the pit straight to start a flying lap, Jules Bianchi (Marussia) joined him on the circuit. 20 minutes into the session, Maldonado clocked the first lap time: 1:36.969. Bianchi clocked the second time of the session: 1:39.268. And now Sergio Perez (McLaren) also joined the on-track activity. The crew asked him for 3 consistent laps to gather data and then one fast lap after that. His first lap was a 1:37.483. Maldonado was still circulating but had not improved his time until 25 minutes into the session when he set a 1:36.178. All of the big names relaxed in the pits. There were only four drivers on the track. 30 minutes into the session, Bianchi crashed his Marussia into the tire barriers at Turn 9 and tore the left front wheel and suspension off. Perez, meanwhile, had set a new fast lap mark of 1:35.450. 36 minutes into the session, Webber posted the second fastest time – 1:35.586. His teammate Sebastian Vettel remained in the pits along with the Mercedes duo of Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg and Ferrari's Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa. 39 minutes into the session, Webber went fastest with a 1:35.208. 41 minutes into the session, Kimi Raikkonen (Lotus) moved into second with a 1:35.364. Vettel, meanwhile, was finally out on the track again as was Massa. At the midpoint of FP1 the top six were: Webber, Vettel (who had just set a 1:35.217) Raikkonen, Perez, Massa and Jenson Button (McLaren.) Less than a minute later Massa shot to the top of the screens with a time of 1:35.126. Rosberg was on track now, and his first flying lap was a 1:34.864. Vettel moved into second with a 1:35.049. Hamilton and Alonso were now out there as well. 50 minutes into the session, Rosberg went even quicker with a 1:34.495 as Vettel improved to a 1:34.768 and Hamilton moved into third with a 1:34.994. They were the only three below the 1:35 level. Alonso was struggling with the Ferrari and down in eighth place. 55 minutes into the session, Hamilton topped the charts with a 1:34.251. Rosberg improved marginally to a 1:34.487. At the one hour mark the top six were: Hamilton, Rosberg, Vettel, Webber, Massa, and Alonso. Romain Grosjean, who said he was really struggling with the rear end of his Lotus, ran wide at Turn 14, but he bounced back with the seventh fastest time. With 24 minutes remaining in the session, Hamilton had now improved to 1:34.157, which was 0.33 of a second quicker than teammate Rosberg. Slowest on the charts was Max Chilton who set a 1:38.763 in his Marussia. With 22 minutes remaining in the session, Maldonado lost the left rear wheel on his Williams and parked it at Turn 14. A couple of marshals corralled the loose wheel and took it away. In a separate incident Guido van der Garde locked the wheels on his Caterham and just missed nudging the barriers at Turn 9. His car was craned off the track and parked next to Bianchi's. With 15 minutes remaining in the session, the drivers were concentrating on long runs rather than ultimate lap times. With 10 minutes remaining in the session, it was all very orderly and team by team in the time sheets with Mercedes' Hamilton and Rosberg first and second, Red Bull's Vettel and Webber third and fourth, Ferrari's Massa and Alonso fifth and sixth, Lotus's Grosjean and Raikkonen seventh and eighth, and McLaren's Perez and Button ninth and 10th. Nico Hulkenberg (11th in his Sauber) broke the chain, and then Toro Rosso's Daniel Ricciardo and Jean-Eric Vergne resumed it by being 12th and 13th. With four minutes to go, Ricciardo moved up to 10th . With 2 minutes remaining in the session, everybody was on track except Valtteri Bottas (Williams) and the guys who had stopped out on the circuit. With 1 minute remaining in the session, Chilton had a graceful spin in his Marussia in Turn 1. The top 10 at the end of FP1 were: Hamilton, Rosberg, Vettel, Webber, Massa, Alonso, Grosjean, Raikkonen, Perez and Ricciardo. Kind Regards Shaky-Schumi |
