Men' s Singles : Carlos Alcaraz (3) won his 14th ATP tournament in career (third Grand Slam, first Roland Garros and 8th on red clay), defeating
Alexander Zverev (4) 6-3, 2-6, 5-7, 6-1, 6-2 after 4h 19'

The match opened with an early break by Alcaraz, immediately recovered by Zverev, who however, in the fifth game, lost his serve again and this time the Spaniard maintained the lead until 5-3, when, with another break, he closed the set 6-3 after 43'; in the second set, the balance was broken in the fifth game, when Zverev broke Alcaraz, breaking him again in the seventh game and equalizing the sets with a 6-2 in 49'; in the third set, the two players proceeded without breaks until the sixth game, when the Spaniard broke the German and went 5-2 after canceling 3 counter-break points, but then he was broken in the ninth game just when serving for the set at 5-3, with Zverev equalizing at 5-5, and then even overtaking Alcaraz and closing the set 7-5 after 1h 01'; in the fourth set, Alcaraz was not affected by the comeback suffered in the previous set and took a two breaks advantage, quickly reaching 4-0, but Zverev manages to immediately recover a break and Alcaraz requested the intervention of the physiotherapist to massage his adductor of the left leg, which was already bandaged, then, after returning to the court, the Spaniard broke the German for the third time in the set and went on to serve for the set, closing it 6-1 in 40'; the last set saw Alcaraz take a break lead in the third game and maintaining it until the seventh game, when, with another break, he managed to close the match and win his eighth title on clay and the third Slam on three different surfaces (after 2022 US Open and 2023 Wimbledon), while Zverev, who lost, again in 5 sets, his second Final in a Major after the one at the 2020 US Open, must once again postpone his first success in a Slam.

In the first set, the Italian started better, immediately taking a break lead in the third game, but the Pole didn't get upset and, with a series of 5 games in a row (with two breaks at 0 and one at 30), closed the set 6-2 after 34'; in the second set, the balance was immediately broken, with Swiatek immediately taking a 3-0 lead, then going, with another break, to 5-0, with Paolini at least managing to avoid a "bagel", but then capitulating in the very next game, even if she can console herself with the best two weeks of her career and her "best ranking" of world's No. 7 from Monday, as well as trying again to become a Slam Champion tomorrow in the Doubles Final, paired with Sara Errani, against the No. 5 seeded Cori Gauff / Katerina Siniakova, while Swiatek scored her 21st success in a row at Roland Garros, where she won 35 of the 37 matches played, and, after narrowly escaping defeat in the second round against Japanese Naomi Osaka (she was down 2-5 in the third set and also saved a match-point), she left only crumbs to her other opponents, giving up just 17 games in the remaining 5 matches, also becoming the third tennis player in history, after Monica Seles and Justine Henin, to win the French Open three times in a row.

Jannik Sinner is set to climb to No. 1 in the PIF ATP Rankings on 10 June. The 22-year-old will become the first Italian and just the 29th player overall to top men’s tennis. Sinner began the year at World No. 4. But with a massive surge to begin 2024, highlighted by his first major title at the Australian Open, an ATP Masters 1.000 title in Miami and Semi-finals at Indian Wells and Monte-Carlo, he will now ascend to the very top of the sport. The Italian had already made history for his country earlier this year by becoming the highest-ranked Italian man in the PIF ATP Rankings (surpassing Adriano Panatta’s career-high ranking of No. 4). Over the past 52 weeks, during which Sinner has earned the points that helped him to World No. 1, he has tallied a 14-3 record against Top 10 opponents. Nine of his victories during that stretch have come against current or former World No. 1s : Djokovic (3), Alcaraz (1) and Medvedev (5). Entering last August’s "National Bank Open presented by Rogers", Sinner had never lifted an ATP Masters 1000 or major trophy. Since then he has claimed six titles, including Masters 1.000 triumphs in Toronto and Miami, as well as his maiden Grand Slam victory at Melbourne Park. His other crowns came at ATP 500 events : Beijing, Vienna and Rotterdam. One of Sinner’s biggest highlights came at last year’s "Nitto ATP Finals", where he competed for the second time. The Italian won his group with an undefeated record before defeating Medvedev to reach the championship match, then losing to Djokovic. On 1 April, Sinner ascended to World No. 2 and now, he will take the final step to the very top of the sport, displacing Novak Djokovic, who has held World No. 1 for more weeks than any player in history (429 by the end of Roland Garros) and was scheduled to face No. 7 Casper Ruud in the Quarterfinals tomorrow, but announced today his withdrawal from the tournament with a right knee injury, suffered during yesterday fourth round match against Argentinian Francisco Cerundolo. Sinner is just the second player born in the 2000s to reach the pinnacle, joining Carlos Alcaraz. Only six active players have ascended to World No. 1 : Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray, Daniil Medvedev, Alcaraz and now Sinner.
