Valtteri Bottas : 7th place Ricciardo takes maiden win in Montreal thriller : Daniel Ricciardo became Formula 1′s newest winner, when he powered to a well calculated victory in the Canadian Grand Prix, keeping patient before pouncing in the final laps to snatch the big prize from Nico Rosberg who spent the last quarter of the race nursing home a seriously malfunctioning Mercedes to second place, managing to keep at bay Sebastian Vettel who made it onto the final step of the podium. Circuit Gilles Villeneuve tends to deliver incident packed races, and the 2014 edition on the Ile Notre Dame was no different. Drama started early on as Marussia drivers Max Chilton and Jules Bianchi made contact on the opening lap, both crashed violently in and around Turn 4, spreading debris and fluids across the track, bringing out the safety car for several laps. When racing resumed it was all about the Mercedes duo at the front with Rosberg chased hard by Hamilton, and the rest left battling it out in their wake. During their duel for the lead there were some big moments, one in which Rosberg was lucky to escape a penalty when he cut the final chicane with Hamilton tucked under his rear wing.Shortly after the half way mark the bullet proof Mercedes finally showed a fallible side as both cars, almost simultaneously suffered with a lack of power which then led to a loss of rear brakes. Suddenly the silver cars, still circulating in tandem, were two seconds a lap slower than their rivals. The pair snapping at each other, but on lap 48 Hamilton drove into the pits and retired, while Rosberg began a remarkable feat of nursing the stricken W05 home. Mercedes boss Toto Wolff explained, “We had a problem with both cars on the same lap. When Lewis pitted, because of pit stop, the temperatures rose too high in the brakes and he lost them. Nico saved it with a brilliant drive.” “We knew brakes could be an issue, but this particular issue occured because if you loses the MGU-K, it’s much harder on the brakes. And with the rise in temperatures in the pits you end up having a real problem,” explained Wolff. “We had two drivers who were perfect. You could have said maybe freezing order would help the end result, but that’s not what we want to do and not what people want to see.” Behind Rosberg at that stage, Sergio Perez was in inspired form as he opted for a one stop race in the Force India, but it came at the cost of outright pace and as a result he soon had a train of cars behind him with Ricciardo and Vettel among them, along with Nico Hulkenberg and Felipe Massa who was on fresh rubber and also having an impressive race. In fact the Brazilian at one stage looked good for victory, as his Williams was by far the faster car in the final stages of the race. Fast forward to the final lap, with Perez’s tyres all but done, Massa appeared to miscalculate his overtake as the pair headed into Turn 1. The Williams clipped the Force India and the two cars slammed the barriers, both drivers lucky to climb out of their respective wrecks. By this point Ricciardo had overtaken Rosberg a couple of laps earlier to take the lead and victory was in the bag as the safety car was deployed for the final lap of the grand prix to tend to the Massa-Perez incident. Few would have bet much on either Red Bull driver taking the win, but as the Mercedes powerhouse imploded, Ricciardo sensed the opportunity and seized it. First by stalking stubborn Perez relentlessly, and then hunting down Rosberg to take his first Formula 1 victory. The day belonged to the Australian, who summed up his race afterwards, “I am still a bit in shock. Thanks everyone. This is ridiculous. There are lots of Australian flags, which is nice. The race really came to life for the last 15-20 laps.” “Hamilton had a problem and Rosberg was slow down the straights. I really struggled to get past Perez but managed to finally get a run out of the last chicane and get a nice run out of turn one and set my sights on Nico with couple of laps to go. I finally managed to get in the right spot to use DRS and it’s an amazing feeling right now,” said Ricciardo. Mercedes’ fine run of wins came to an end on a day in which they were targeting a record of six 1-2 victories, they were lucky not to end up with two DNFs, as by all accounts Rosberg did an outstanding job to keep the car going in the condition it was in. His efforts were rewarded with second place and a 22 points lead over his teammate in the world championship standings. Rosberg commented, “That was all over the place. There was so much going on. It’s disappointing because we want to win every race and we have the car to win every race. It was disappointing to have a problem like that but after everything to finish second in the end was OK. “We want to keep fighting, just as we did today. We owe that to the fans and will keep doing it. It’s so close and I don’t think it’s straining the cars. When the team sees it’s risking the cars they will jump in and make sure we bring them home. We need to make sure we get to the end of the race,” added Rosberg. Third placed Vettel made a great start, slotting into second place but relinquished that to Hamilton shortly after the safety car period ended. He nevertheless toiled hard all afternoon, losing out to teammate Ricciardo when the Australian opted for an early pitstop and then did enough to leap-frog the reigning world champion. Vettel reflected, “Congratulations to Daniel. It’s his day. We had a big help from Mercedes, unlike other weekends, but we were there to capitalise. It’s been a positive day. Daniel’s first win and a first win for Renault in the new era of engines. They have had a good comeback although there is still plenty of work ahead of us because Mercedes are quicker down the straight. But all in all it’s been a good day.” Everyone behind Vettel inherited two places at the expense of Massa and Perez. Invariably in races of high attrition Jenson Button rises to the occasion, and this time around it was no exception as the McLaren driver turned ninth on the grid into fourth place at the end of the day. “If you got caught in traffic it was difficult to overtake but I fought my way through in the end,” said Button. “The incident with Sergio and Felipe you don’t want to see but they are OK which is good and I had that little dice with Fernando [Alonso] and [Nico] Hulkenberg and went down the inside of both of them. It was a fun race and some reasonable points. In a straight-forward race we wouldn’t have finished fourth but I feel we are making progress with the car and the team should be happy.” Nico Hulkenberg salvaging some joy for Force India by finishing fifth on a one stop strategy. The German opting to start the race with the yellow band Pirelli soft tyres, and later bolting on the super softs but for some reason the latter tyres did not give him the extra edge one would have expected. Fernando Alonso finished sixth in the Ferrari, but the F14T did not give him options to attack and thus it was more of a case of gritting it out, which the Spaniard did while his teammate Kimi Raikkonen who finished tenth, struggled to the point that he spun at the slowest point of the track in the process. Valterri Bottas salvaged seventh place for Williams, the young Finn in the wars throughout the course of the afternoon. Jean Eric Vergne was eight in the Toro Rosso and McLaren rookie Kevin Magnussen crossed the line ninth. Kind Regards Shaky - Schumi |

The sun was belting down on the track and Gene Haas was spotted in the Ferrari garage. Esteban Gutierrez will miss qualifying due to the Mexican damaging his car in the final practice session earlier on today. Q1: Bottas was out first in the Williams and set the first timed lap of the session with a 1:18.270. Drivers were pushing hard, with a few mistakes into Turn 1 being made from drivers up and down the grid. Rosberg's engineer came over the radio saying that they couldn’t hear the German. Raikkonen's car was very unstable and because of that, he nearly made a visit into the wall of champions. Perez joins the list drivers that have dipped the wheel onto the grass under braking at Turn 8 and spun. The Mexican was able to get going again. Maldonado pulls of at Turn 3 and that ends his session because he was 17th. The team spotted something on the telemetry that was going to blow the engine up so they told the Venezuelan to pull off the track and stop the car. Marcus Ericsson in the Caterham carried too much speed into Turn 8 and tried to flick the car into Turn 9 but lost the back end. This caused the Swede to hit the wall on the outside and caused a red flag. He destroyed the left rear of the CT05. The red flag ends Q1 because there was only 16 seconds left on the clock. The cars that were eliminated were Maldonado, Chilton, Bainchi, Kobayashi, Ericsson and Gutierrez. Q2: Sutil was out first in the Sauber and set the first time in Q2 with a 1:18.006. Raikkonen brushed the wall at the exit of Turn 4. Renault powered cars were struggling to get through to Q3 and compared with the Mercedes powered cars as well. The cars that were eliminated were Hulkenberg, Magnussen, Perez, Grosjean, Kvyat and Sutil. Q3: Bottas was out first and set a time of 1:15.550. Raikkonen left it quite late to go out and when he was on his timed lap, the other drivers were on their out lap. Hamilton locked up going into Turn 8 and that’s what cost him the pole. Rosberg takes pole for tomorrows Grand Prix with a 1:14.874. With Hamilton second and Vettel third. The rest of the top ten is as follows; Bottas, Massa, Ricciardo, Alonso, Vergne, Button, Raikkonen. Esteban Gutierrez - Sauber 1:22.388 +6.778 Hamilton retains upper hand : Ahead of qualifying Lewis Hamilton retained the upper hand in the final free practice session of the Canadian Grand Prix weekend, scorching around the Ile Notre dame track half a second faster than anyone else as Mercedes continued to set the pace as they look to make history on Sunday. Ironically Hamilton set his best lap time of 1:15.610 on the soft Pirelli (yellow band) tyres, not the super-soft options from which most teams managed to extract a further half second or so – but neither Mercedes could match that difference with the red band Pirellis. Nico Rosberg was third fastest, but on both the super-softs and softs he was about half a second down on his teammate – the difference between the two at the venue is that Hamilton has three grand prix wins at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, while Rosberg has never finished better than fourth at the venue . The fact that neither Hamilton or Rosberg improved their times with the supposedly faster tyre option suggests one of two things: the W05 cannot maximise the super-softs or, more likely, the pair have more than they are showing in their armoury and are keeping the powder dry for when fireworks are required – starting with qualifying. Splitting the Silver Arrows at the top of the timing screens was Felipe Massa in the ice white Williams, who were enjoying good form on a track that clearly suits their car. Valterri Bottas was seventh fastest, about a second down on his Brazilian teammate. Fernando Alonso was best of the Ferrari pair with the fourth fastest time, with Kimi Raikkonen sixth fastest. The Maranello chaps split by Daniel Ricciardo who set the fifth best time in the Red Bull, while teammate Sebastian Vettel was hampered what appeared to be a brake issue which curtailed his running in the one hour session. Impressing in his first grand prix weekend in Canada was Toro Rosso rookie Daniil Kvyat who ended eighth fastest, fractionally faster than teammate Jean Eric Vergne who was ninth. The session was marred when Esteban Gutierrez spun out in Turn 3 and slammed into the wall at the exit of Turn 4 causing substantial damage to his Sauber. FP3 was typical of sessions at the venue with small mistakes punished with big moments, several drivers spun or over shot various braking points which could well carry over into qualifying in the afternoon, and the race itself. Up next : Qualifying at 19.00 CET Kind Regards Shaky - Schumi |

Marcus Ericsson - Caterham 1:22.418 +6.300 22. Jules Bianchi - Marussia F1 Team 1:32.127 +16.009 Lewis Hamilton beats Nico Rosberg in practice two : Lewis Hamilton continued the Mercedes team's dominance of Formula 1 in 2014 by topping Friday's second free practice session for the Canadian Grand Prix. Hamilton and Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg headed the timesheets for much of the afternoon, with the 2008 world champion fastest while the field was on the slower soft-compound Pirellis early on. Rosberg knocked Williams driver Valtteri Bottas off top spot after 17 minutes, with Hamilton outpacing him moments later as the Silver Arrows pressed home their advantage. Rosberg was the first frontunner to take super-softs, but he only improved on his previous best time by nine hundredths of a second, which was still enough to relegate Hamilton to second with just under 40 minutes remaining. Hamilton's response was almost immediate as he banged in the best time in all three sectors of the circuit to retake top spot by over half a second. Although Rosberg subsequently improved again, he ended up 0.175s off his team-mate. Ferrari had looked set to end the session as the best of the rest, with Kimi Raikkonen shading Fernando Alonso, but Red Bull driver Sebastian Vettel left his super-soft run late. Vettel jumped to third in the closing stages of the session, 0.455s off the pace, with Raikkonen fourth-fastest, just half a tenth quicker than his team-mate. The Finn also suffered a spin after losing his Ferrari on the power at the exit of the hairpin while on super-softs, although this was after he had posted his quickest time. Felipe Massa was sixth fastest ahead of Williams-Mercedes team-mate Valtteri Bottas, who was just over a tenth slower. Kevin Magnussen and Jenson Button ended up just behind the duo, with the McLaren showing encouraging pace at a track that masks some of the shortcomings of its car. Tenth-fastest Jean-Eric Vergne, who took to the escape road at the first chicane in the final minute of the session after locking up his brakes, was only a second off the pace, but the Frenchman had almost a 0.5s advantage over Romain Grosjean's Lotus, which was 11th. Daniel Ricciardo was only 12th fastest after encountering some gear-change issues during the afternoon, but he was still able to outpace the two Force Indias. Several drivers had off-track moments, with Kamui Kobayashi, who sat out the morning session to allow Alexander Rossi some mileage, spinning at Turn 2 early on. Esteban Gutierrez also lost his Sauber at the first chicane early on and spun, while both Grosjean and Adrian Sutil missed the last corner on their first super-soft runs. Sutil's off at the last chicane was as a result of encountering a slow-moving Magnussen, with stewards investigating the incident but opting to take no action. Also among those to cut the final chicane were Kobayashi, Rosberg and Pastor Maldonado. Daniil Kvyat's session ended prematurely, the Russian completing only one run of nine laps before returning to the Toro Rosso garage and never re-emerging. It was also a quiet session for Jules Bianchi, whose Marussia team had replaced a number of components at the rear of the car after he glanced the wall exiting the first chicane this morning. He hit engine problems following the completion of only three slow laps in practice two. Caterham driver Marcus Ericsson also had a disappointing afternoon, pulling off at the first chicane shortly after the half-hour mark before he had the chance to use the super-soft Pirellis. Alexander Rossi - Caterham - 1:21.757 +4.519 Alonso beats Mercedes duo in first practice: Fernando Alonso claimed the opening P1 for the Canadian Grand Prix weekend having beaten Lewis Hamilton by 0.016s. McLaren rookie Kevin Magnussen was the first out on a dirty Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, clocking a 1:23.2. And although he lowered the benchmark with each consecutive lap, he could do nothing the stop the Mercedes drivers from gaining control. Lewis Hamilton, despite an early scare that turned out to be a radio issue, hit the front with a 1:18.997, easily half a second up on second-placed Felipe Massa. It soon became a Mercedes 1-2 as Nico Rosberg closed up on his team-mate, the German 0.03s down. The duo went even quicker, a 1:18.088 for Hamilton and a 1:18.138 for Rosberg, while Fernando Alonso slotted his Ferrari into third place, half a second slower on the P1 time. With dark clouds closing in on the dirty track, drivers struggled to get heat into their tyres with Caterham reserve driver Alexander Rossi told his tyre temperature is at the "bottom of the working range." That explained his lock ups as well as issues other drivers such as Pastor Maldonado were experiencing. Back at the front and out for a second run, Rosberg went quickest ahead of Hamilton only for the Brit to overhaul him. It was all change, though, as Alonso posted a 1:17.238, edging Hamilton by 0.016s. When the Mercedes drivers came out for their final run both were fueled up meaning Alonso finished quickest of all ahead of the Brackley racers. Sebastian Vettel was fourth quickest ahead of Valtteri Bottas and Daniel Ricciardo. There were problems for Monaco points-scorer Jules Bianchi as he hit the wall, not the Wall of Champions, just the wall. That has left him with a "maybe a track rod failure" he said as he crawled back to the pits with a seriously vibrating Marussia. Meanwhile, an "ERS pump failure" meant Massa managed just seven laps as his team worked on fixing the problem while a "control unit" issue curtailed Esteban Gutierrez's morning. Canadian Grand Prix – circuit Gilles Villeneuve - (first race in Montreal: 1978)
after safety problems with Mosport, the Canadian Grand Prix moved to its current home on Île Notre-Dame, a man-made island in the St. Lawrence river adjacent to Montreal. Here, in 1978, Gilles Villeneuve scored his first Formula One victory in the inaugural race. Four years later, in 1982, the circuit was renamed in memory of Gilles Villeneuve after his death. The Montreal circuit is known as a "stop and go" track. Fuel consumption is very high while the downforce set-up is low to maximise the top speed on the straights. Here the engine power and brake balance are very important. The track layout is quite simple but I like it. Look what did on this track in 1981 Gilles Villeneuve. Driving blind Pirelli has chosen for this Gran Prix the “Soft yellow” and “supersoft Red” Winning strategy last year: 2 pit stop for pilots on podium (Vettel, Alonso Hamilton) first pit stop between lap n. 16/19 and second pit stop between lap 47/49 Podium 2011: Button (Mc Laren) – 2° Vettel and 3° Webber. Fernando Alonso : 4th place Rosberg defeats Hamilton: Nico Rosberg turned his controversial pole position into faultless victory for Mercedes on Sunday whe regained the lead in the drivers’ world championship by winning the Monaco Grand Prix, at a venue the German considers his home circuit, and in what was an incident packed race, with a high attrition rate that claimed world champion Sebastian Vettel very early on in the proceedings. The 28-year-old German, made his best start of the season, and came home 9.2 seconds clear of nearest rival which was teammate Lewis Hamilton who coped with loss of vision in one eye as he held off Australian Daniel Ricciardo’s Red Bull in the closing laps. It was Rosberg’s second consecutive victory at the principality, his second win of the 2014 season and the fifth win of his career. “It’s another special day for me, for sure,” said Rosberg. “Lewis drove well and pushed me massively hard. The pressure was on but I kept it cool and pulled a bit of a gap at the end because of the refreshed tyres. Thanks to the team for all their great work.” Ricciardo summed up his thoughts on the podium, “It’s really nice to be on the podium. The start was not great, it was frustrating. Sebastian had a problem and I got fourth, then Raikkonen had a puncture so we inherited third. At the end, we closed in on Lewis. We tried to put pressure on but third was best we could do.” Fernando Alonso finished fourth for Ferrari ahead of Nico Hulkenberg of Force India and Jenson Button who finished sixth for McLaren. Felipe Massa came home seventh for Williams, Jules Bianchi was eighth for Marussia ahead of fellow-Frenchman Romain Grosjean of Lotus and Kevin Magnussen finished 10th in the second McLaren. It was a historic day from Marussia as they finally scored their first Formula 1 world championship points, beating their arch rivals Caterham, to the accolade. “Finally we have a point!” Bianchi declared in delight on the team radio after he heard that he finished ninth despite a five-second penalty applied to his race time. Later the Frenchman added, “It’s just amazing for us, we have been waiting for this for a long time and now we have done it”. At the sharp end Rosberg’s win carried him to 122 points in the title race ahead of Hamilton, who was only half a second ahead of Ricciardo as they crossed the line, on 118. On an overcast afternoon in the Mediterranean principality, with an air temperature of 20 degrees Celsius and a track temperature of 28, there was blatant tension in the air before the start. Following Saturday’s controversy, after Rosberg had gone down an escape road on his final lap, and Hamilton’s threat to ‘take a leaf out of Senna’s book’, fireworks were expected. Hamilton did not in public at any rate congratulate Rosberg or make any contact with his teammate on the podium. Given the drama of 24 hours earlier Hamilton and his Mercedes teammate delivered a damp squib when the lights went out, Hamilton following Rosberg down to Ste Devote. As the two Mercedes streaked clear, separated by less than a car’s length on the opening lap, Raikkonen made the most of a fast start in his Ferrari to take fourth place behind Vettel, who had jumped teammate Ricciardo off the grid. Vettel’s good start counted for little, however, as he was soon hit by a loss of power and gearbox problems. “Come on guys,” he said, on the team radio. “I’m sure you are trying everything… I’m stuck in first gear.” The reigning world champion retired on lap eight, joining the luckless Pastor Maldonado, whose Renault did not start and was pushed off the grid , and Sergio Perez, who was hit by Briton Jenson Button’s McLaren at the Mirabeau corner on the opening lap, on the sidelines. The safety car came out for the first time. Soon after, on lap 25, Adrian Sutil, who had been charging hard, finally lost control at the chicane and hit the barriers, triggering a second safety car intervention which, in turn, caused the leaders to dive into the pits for fresh tyres on laps 27 and 28 respectively. This was arguably the best chance Hamilton had of seriously challenging for victory as he was gifted an opportunity to pit just before the second safety car was deployed, after Sutil’s shunt at the Chicane. There appeared to be ample time for his pit wall to make the call to bring him in, as the debris from the Sauber strewn across the track would clearly require a safety car. But no call was made to the driver of car number 44. Hamilton was not pleased and made it quite clear over the radio: “I knew we should have pitted on that lap, but I knew you wouldn’t call me in guys.” Racing resumed on lap 30 when Raikkonen had dropped to 14th after a collision and puncture and Vergne’s Toro Rosso crew released their driver directly – and dangerously – into the path of Kevin Magnussen’s McLaren. Vergne, running sixth, was given a drive-through penalty that dropped him to 12th before an engine failure later ended his race. Hamilton remained virtually glued to Rosberg’s tail, just six-tenths of a second behind, as they led the field by more than seven seconds. Hamilton clearly believed incessant pressure might force an error as the race unfolded. At half-distance, Rosberg was warned that he needed to use higher gears to conserve fuel for the closing laps when Hamilton was expected to attack again. This seemed certain until, with 14 laps to go, Hamilton’s vision was impaired, causing him to ease off by four seconds. “I can’t see out of my left eye – I’ve got some dirt, or something, in my eye,” he reported. Later he played down the incident when summing up his race, “It was just something that came through the visor. – it was nothing important. It was a good day for us – it’s very important for the team to get another 1-2. I had great pace and I felt I was strong but it’s incredibly difficult to overtake.” With tensions mounting with every session, let alone every race, the podium was an awkward affair with Hamilton ignoring Rosberg and vice versa, the tension between the two title contenders is palpable and sure to get even worse – it is clearly war within the Silver Arrows camp. Marcus Ericsson - Caterham - 1:21.732 +5.743 Qualifying Time : 1:15.989 Pole : Nico Rosberg Team Bat. : Daniel Ricciardo > Sebastian Vettel Grid Pos. Jenson Button : 12th place Rosberg takes second successive Monaco pole : Nico Rosberg took his second successive Monaco Grand Prix pole position during Saturday's qualifying hour. The German set a 1:15.989 during the opening set of Q3 runs to edge out Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton, before an error on his final lap brought out the yellow flags and prevented any improvements.Heading into the third and final grid-deciding phase, Hamilton held the upper hand over Rosberg, having set the pace in final practice and topped the Q2 timesheets. But it was Rosberg who moved to the front on the opening Q3 runs, breaking into the 1m15s for the first time this weekend and placing half a tenth ahead of Hamilton. All drivers involved in the shootout bolted on fresh Super Softs for final attempts, but Rosberg – one of the first to start his run – made a mistake on the run down to Mirabeau and was forced to take to the escape road. This brought out the yellow flags and prevented any of his main rivals from posting improved lap times. Hamilton thus had to settle for second on tomorrow's grid, sparking a rather frosty parc ferme atmosphere. As has been the case for the majority of the Monaco weekend, the Red Bulls of Daniel Ricciardo and Sebastian Vettel were best of the rest, the latter doing particularly well to overcome a suspected ERS issue. Ferrari duo Fernando Alonso and Kimi Räikkönen followed, with Toro Rosso's Jean-Éric Vergne, ever-impressive rookies Kevin Magnussen and Daniil Kvyat and Force India's Sergio Pérez completing the top ten places. While their team-mates made it through to Q3, Nico Hülkenberg and Jenson Button both fell at the second hurdle, along with Valtteri Bottas, the Lotuses of Romain Grosjean and Pastor Maldonado and Felipe Massa. Massa had been due to compete in the second phase, but was involved in an incident with Marcus Ericsson at the end of Q1, the Caterham driver misjudging his braking point for Mirabeau and collided against the Williams . Sauber's miserable start to the 2014 season continued, with both Esteban Gutiérrez and Adrian Sutil falling at the first hurdle. Behind, Marussia drivers Jules Bianchi and Max Chilton placed ahead of their Caterham rivals. Kind Regards Shaky - Schumi |
