Narain Karthikeyan : HRT F1 Team : no time - Rain : no Comment of the qualifying : Mark Webber beat Red Bull team-mate Sebastian Vettel to Korean Grand Prix pole position as the Australian's last lap upstaged the hitherto dominant world champion. Vettel had looked unstoppable until the final seconds of qualifying. Fastest in Q1 and Q2, his first Q3 lap was three tenths of a second clear of the opposition. But then Webber, who had been third in the provisional order, found a half-second improvement on his last pole attempt to set a 1m37.242s. The result was also the 200th Formula 1 pole for Red Bull's engine supplier Renault. Vettel's response was simply not quick enough, with a poor first sector preventing him from improving on his earlier mark. That ensured pole for Webber by 0.074s, despite his potentially costly practice problems. Fernando Alonso had held the outside front row grid spot after the first Q1 runs, but Webber's leap and an improvement from Lewis Hamilton's McLaren pushed the championship leader's Ferrari back to fourth. Lotus showed better form than of late as Kimi Raikkonen and Romain Grosjean took fifth and seventh in their upgraded cars, either side of Ferrari's Felipe Massa. Nico Hulkenberg took his Force India to eighth, beating the Mercedes of Nico Rosberg and Michael Schumacher. There could have been several surprises in the early part of qualifying, but in the end the only major upset was that Jenson Button did not make Q3. The McLaren driver's first Q2 lap was compromised by an error, and then he missed the cut by 0.005s when he had to back off on his second shot as yellows flew for Daniel Ricciardo's Toro Rosso parking with a gearbox problem. Had the end of Q1 worked out very slightly differently, neither McLaren would have reached the top 10. Hamilton was one of few drivers not to use super softs in Q1, and as others found big gains on the quicker rubber, his early time was shoved back to 17th place. The McLaren was sat in the pits and could not respond, but escaped a shock elimination as Bruno Senna's final lap was not good enough, leaving the Williams down with the Caterhams, Marussias and HRTs. Senna's team-mate Pastor Maldonado fared only marginally better, qualifying 15th. Alonso did use super softs and make two runs in Q1, yet that was only good enough for 16th. There were no such scares for either Hamilton or Alonso in Q2, though. Sauber had to settle for 12th and 13th this week, while Paul di Resta blamed traffic as his Force India ended up only 14th. At the very back, Narain Karthikeyan did not set a time due to brake problems with his HRT. Kind Regards Shaky-Schumi |

South Korean Grand Prix – Yeongam circuit – 3° edition
This circuit features different distinct sections. Firstly there are three straights connected by tight curves. In sector one, you need a very good top speed and good traction because there are big breaking zones at the end of the straights one of which, (the second) is 1.2 kilometer long. These are followed by a series of twisting bends. Turns 7 and 8 are fast and then in third section (the last part of the lap) there are slow and medium turns with the track that runs close to the barriers on both sides; so the aerodynamic set-up is compromise between the differing needs of each sector. The lap runs anticlockwise, with the pitlane on the outside of the circuit along the seafront. Yeongam circuit has been designed by celebrated architect Hermann Tilke, but honestly, I do not like this track. The reason: three consecutive straights that begin and end with slow corners and the last two sectors are busy of not interesting bends. In my opinion only Yas Marina (Abu Dhabi) and Bahrain circuit are worse than Yeongam. In the last race at Suzuka, the Red Bull has experimented a passive 'double-DRS' device. This new system helped the RB8 in qualifying when the rear wing is open. In this way the Red Bull gains in top speed. In this season all the cars are slower than last year, but in the japanese Grand Prix, the gap between the pole position 2011 (1.30.466) and 2012 (1.30.839) was only +0.373 sec. while in the other races of this season, the gap has always been higher. At Suzuka, Vettel never used DRS in the race but was still very fast, perhaps due to a new exhaust layout regulation. Sunday his best lap was 1.35.774 almost nine tenths less than Button and Kobayashi, while the best lap for Massa was 1.36.894 with the same strategy. We'll see what happens in Korea. Tyre compounds Soft yellow (prime) and supersoft red(option) as at Monaco, Montreal and Singapore. The DRS zone on the main straight. Podium 2011: Vettel – Hamilton – Webber. fastest lap on race: Vettel – pole position : Hamilton 1'35''820 Podium 2010: Alonso – Hamilton – Massa. fastest lap on race: Alonso – pole position : Vettel 1'35''585 The statistic of this season after 15 races wins: Vettel, Alonso and Hamilton (3)Webber and Button (2), Rosberg, , Maldonado (1) second place: Raikkonen and Button (3); Alonso, Vettel and Perez (2), Rosberg, Grosjean and Massa(1) third place: Raikkonen Alonso and Hamilton(3) Grosjean (2), Vettel, Schumacher, Perez and Kobayashi (1) pole: Hamilton(5) Vettel (4); Alonso (2), Rosberg, Maldonado, Webber and Button (1) fastest lap: Vettel(4); Raikkonen and Rosberg (2), Button, Kobayashi, Grosjean, Perez, Schumacher Senna and Hulkenberg(1) |
