I have been fascinated by the contributions from 'bigalathome' but the Swannery at Abbotsbury is a bit out of his local area.
This is situated in a geographically and historically significant area of the Dorset Coast. It is actually at the extreme west end of The Fleet, a stretch of brackish water reaching from Abbotsbury in the west to Portland in the east. The Fleet is separated from the sea by The Chesil Bank, a long thin expanse of shingle, rising to a height of approximately 15 metres above mean high water level. The phenomenon of longshore drift grades the shingle along the length of the bank, pea sized at the western end, orange sized to the east. It is said that smugglers landing on the beach at night could tell exactly where they were by the size of the shingle. Close to the shore of The Fleet stands the village called Fleet, J. Meade Falkner's smuggling novel Moonfleet is set in the village. The Fleet was used for the initial testing of Barnes Wallis' bouncing bomb and immortalised in the film "The Dam Busters". I may follow the example set by 'bigalathome' and highlight some areas of interest around where I live ... as soon as I find any ![]() |
